Can S-VHS record widescreen?

S-VHS will record widescreen video as long as it is standard definition. VHS does not support high definition at all. A feed from a source on either a composite or S-video connection will be recorded whether it is 16 : 9 or 4 : 3 format.

In Europe, widescreen format has been used in standard definition broadcasts for almost 20 years. Many VHS recorders in Europe can also capture an indicator within the signal to show that it is in a widescreen format (known as WSS for wide screen signalling). The recorder will then pass the signal to the television on playback enabling the television to adjust the screen format automatically.

However, in North America, widescreen has not been introduced for standard definition signals. VHS recorders often will not handle the WSS so if a widescreen format is played back, the screen format may need to be adjusted manually. Some experimentation may be needed to get the image format right.

How do you get the menu button up without a remote?

Many television sets have a non-remote way to bring up a menu by either having a specific menu button (on newer t.v.'s) or by pressing a combination of two buttons. For instance, some t.v.'s menu appears when you press the next channel and previous channel simultaneously.

How can you receive UHF TV without cable service if the UHF cable is hooked to a VCR and you have no remote for the TV?

Without cable, you can pick up broadcast television signals, VHF and UHF, over the air with an antenna. The typical set-top TV antenna has two elements, the VHF "rabbit ears" and the UHF loop. A roof-top antenna also has both kinds of elements. VHF covers channels 2-13; UHF is all the rest. The antenna may be connected directly to the television (usually, these days, to the round, RF/cable input), or it may be connected to a VCR. VCRs have built-in television tuners and can pass the tuned signal through to the television. This way, even if there is no remote control available for the television, you can use the remote for the VCR to change channels. There are solutions for replacing a missing remote control.

- Visit Radio Shack, which carries a large line of "universal remotes," which can be programmed to control almost any home entertainment equipment. One remote can control multiple devices.

- Call 1-800-REMOTES, or log on to their Web site, 800remotes dot com. They sell factory-original remotes.

- Try searching for your remote on the manufacturer's Web site. But if your model is discontinuted, they may no longer carry the remote.

- Try searching for your remote on an auctions site such as eBay. (Observe appropriate cautions.)

Do you need a stronger signal for digital TV or for analog TV?

There are two answers to the question - Digital or analog. Here is the reason why:

Digital signal are very robust signals as long as they do not fall below a certain strength and quality. As long as the signal is above that threshold, a receiver should be able to interpret the data correctly. That means a full quality image even though the signal may only just be above the strength and quality threshold.

Analog signals need a higher signal strength and quality to achieve full quality images at the receiver. As the signal strength and quality reduce, more noise and other distortion can be detected in the image. Despite this, a signal strength and quality far lower than an equivalent digital signal will still be received. The image may be degraded to the point where noise is intrusive, but the content can still be seen.

Broadcasters take into account the differing requirements of digital television and will make efforts to ensure that the signals received are of sufficient quality to provide reliable programs.

It is perhaps worth pointing out that signal strength and signal quality are two separate measurements. Quality is just as important as strength so signal strength alone will not guarantee good reception in all cases.

What kind of backlighting do LCD HDTVs use?

The first main type of LCD illumination is called CCFL. CCFL uses strong bulbs - mainly florescent to light up the screen. Newer HDTVs have now switched to using LED technology, as LED lamps are smaller, less expensive to produce, maintain, & deliver better results than the CCFL illumination. There are three types of LED LCD back-lighting configuration for all modern HDTVs. The first type is called edge-lighting LED. Edge lighting uses LED bulbs built around the back edges of the screen. This configuration produces results worse than full LED illumination, and sometimes even worse than CCFL. It's used to make TVs very thin, mainly the ones that you can hang up on the wall. The second type is the fully lit LED LCD. This configuration (also known as Full Native LED LCD lighting) has the same round LED bulbs used in edge-lighting, except the entire back of the screen is populated, instead of just edges. This produces a much better picture than the edge lit displays, while the TV will not be as thin, and at a bit higher energy cost. The third type of LCD HDTV back-lighting configuration is the fully lit LED LCD with local dimming. This configuration supports the same fully populated LED illumination, except special TV software controls which bulbs are left on and off, all based entirely on the picture. Let's say there is a picture of a night in Paris with a lit up Eiffel Tower, local dimming option keeps the bulbs behind the black sky off, thus providing a darker black sky. The LED bulbs behind the light tower however will be lit up. Local dimming (also known as the dynamic dimming) is considered to be the best type of back-lighting because it constantly changes the lighting to serve each individual image displayed.
