Dog Training

Dogs are intelligent companions that have been used to help man for centuries. Sometimes they need help to learn how to obey and assist their owners. That help is called training, and this category is for everything related to that training.

Is there some kind of spray that will keep puppies from chewing on things they aren't suppose to?

don't bother buying sprays, just a waste of money, I got this tip and it works, sounds weird tho, Now hear me out.... you know the pup loves their owners smell, so take some of your socks or both you and anyone who lives with you socks, they must be a little dirty with your scents on them, use old ones if you can, make sure they have a least 2 days use on them. Then tie them up together to make a toy, like a bunch of wide ropes, then soak them with water, then put them into a plastic freezer bag, when frozen give to the pup, it will help stop his chewing, and he will then play with it, till its in shreds and you will have to make another, make 2 while you are at it. this should solve your problem. I've been thru the chewing many a time, my alligator shoes!!! my new fishing rod,,geez the things they chew on. I hope this helps you, I had tried the bitter apple spray etc, no luck with any of them, the socks help. Love the first post and a good idea. I have a Cockapoo male and he went through the chewing stage. Puppies are like human babies and do teeth. I went and got a hard rubber baby teething ring and put it in the freezer then gave it to him. He loved it and it was soothing to his gums. I still buy these plastic/rubber toys shaped in a bone with prongs on them and he is now just over a year old and loves to chew on that old thing. Thus, no more chewing on anything around the house, but he'll steal socks, my husband's underwear and is a complete kleptomaniac! LOL Thankfully he doesn't ruin anything, but he does have 2 stashes around the house and when he's not looking I retrieve what I need too.

What do you do if your dog is scared of a Frisbee?

Slowly introduce the frisbee to the dog. When you have it in your hand give the dog treats so that the dog knows that the frisbee is not a bad thing. Leave the frisbee around the house so that the dog gets used to seeing it. Soon enough your dog will be comfortable with it.

Why does your dog bark at night at the door like somebody is there and get spooked like he senses something like ghosts?

Dogs have very good hearing , it could be a moth flying against the door, you may not hear it but your dog can, or even some critter walking by, look to more "earthly" reasons , for the answer.

What does it mean when your Great Dane attacks your female mutt all the time especially when they are eating?

The Great Dane is being the dominant dog, or the Alpha. In wolf packs, the hierarchy goes-

Alpha (Male and Female)

Beta (Male and Female)

Omega (Males and Females)

Juveniles (Males and Female)

The Alpha wolves always eat first after a kill and get however much food they want. The rest of the pack must come up to the Alpha and beg for food. Your Great Dane feels challenged when your female mutt comes up to eat without asking permission, and he is showing his dominance to remind her of her position in the pack. You can solve this in a few ways-

1. Establish dominance with the Great Dane and your Mutt. Have everyone else in the household establish dominance as well. Do your best to show your Great Dane that he is equal or of lesser rank than the female.

2. Feed them in separate places (but this will only cure the fighting while they are eating).

3. Allow the Great Dane to establish dominance. (This is NOT a good idea and should not be tried unless the Great Dane will not stop attacking the dog.

Remember to give equal affection to both dogs, and do NOT pet or show affection to the Great Dane after attacking the mutt. Showing affection will only reinforce the behavior, not calm him down.

How do you build up defensive drive in a dog?

A dog's defensive drive is the drive to protect itself from a threat. When an untrained dog is working in its defensive drive it thinks that it's in a position where it is being threatened or attacked and as a result it is stressed. For progressive defense training we want a dog, that even though it is unsure of its position, it will initially react to a limited amount of threat with an aggressive challenge. Willingness to defend himself is inherited from his parents. It cannot be trained into the dog no matter how hard you try. If a dog has not inherited the defensive gene there is no way we are going to make this dog a protection dog. A few good examples of this are most labs, golden retrievers, huskies or other such breeds.

First build up your dogs prey drive with motivational toys like a jute tug, play tug o war carefully making sure you let your dog win enough to keep his drive high. When he wins it praise him and let him have it for a minuet or 2, DON'T hassle him , but when you say 'out' or what ever your command is to give up the toy, make sure he lets you take it. once in your possession repeat. Soft rubber balls are good motivators too, throw them, bounce them close, hide the ball in long grass let him locate it and praise him when he finds it.

you can teach your dog everything in prey drive, you can even get a bite sleeve and train bite work, but you will only know how far your dog can go, with the help of a highly skilled agitator/decoy that knows how far he can push a dog before it goes into avoidance and runs away..

The only time your dog should start defense drive is after he has reached mental maturity sometimes 2-3 years old and only after he has gone through the foundation work in prey drive.

Working defensive drive takes a highly skilled helper that is experienced at reading and understanding temperament and knowing exactly how far a dog can be pressured or threatened in defense before it is pushed into avoidance.

Hope this helps

Are westies hard to train?

I attended a weekly dog training session for my dog for 10 weeks. I found it quite easy to train him. He was able to learn most of the commands (eg. sit, heel, down, stay) within 3 days.

It helps if your westie is food-motivated. I have seen dogs (especially maltese) who don't like to eat treats, and thus are hard to train.

It also depends on how dedicated you are in training it. If you only work with it once a week, it's going to take ages to learn. You have to work with it for 30 min to 1 hour a day, not more than 1 hour, not less than 30 min. We don't want it to work too hard and waste all its energy on training, but we don't want it to be under-trained as well.

Another factor is the dog itself. There's a hierarchy in a pack of dogs when they are born. I heard that when dogs are born, they like to sleep on top of one another. So usually the "top dog" will tend to be more stubborn and unwilling to learn. The "top dog" will hence be hard to train, and also sometimes hard to rear as a pet. Fortunately for me, my westie is probably at the bottom, since he's pretty good-natured. It depends on your luck, because you can't really see the hierarchy in the dog's enclosure in the pet shop.

Sorry for a lot of redundant information.

I heard from my trainer that some of the westies he has helped to train are quite difficult to handle, due to their stubborn personality. Females will be better to handle, but there is not much difference between the 2 genders in terms of difficulty.

Like I said, it depends on your luck on the personality of your dog.

Can a dog growl when happy?

Yes, dogs growl when they are playing. But attention should be paid to the dog's body language. Usually, if they are wagging their tails, they are just playing around.

How do you help your young daughter to pee outside?

First, we will assume you meant help your young dog, not daughter, to pee outside. Second, you should start off by kennel training your dog while they are a puppy. This means when you can't have your eyes on the dog 100% of the time, they go into the kennel because we are looking to set the dog up for success not failure. If the puppy is allowed to roam free in the home, it will pee. When the dog is out and about in the house and being monitored, if you see them start to squat, use a quick startle like a clap of the hands to stop the behavior then quickly rush the dog outside. When they start to pee, praise them using a name for the behavior like "good potty" or "good pee". The behavior that immediately preceded the praise (in this instance, peeing outside) will repeat itself more often as the dog learns that it will be praised every time. Young puppies can not hold their bladder for long periods of time, and this is the reason for being kenneled when motioning is not possible. The kennel should be large enough for the dog to stand up turn around and lay back down again. This will stop urination and deification in the kennel. If the kennel is too large, the dog may relieve itself in one corner. A puppy should be taken out every 2-4 hours depending on age. This will teach the puppy to learn to hold their bladder until brought outside.

What does a dogs training consist of?

It depends what you want your dog to do!

The main thing you would want is your dog to be house broken. My puppy is still learning to go outside when she needs to go, its not very pleasant inside.

Learning sit is also very helpful. Its a way to get your dogs attention and to stop what they are doing.

Their are also other basic tricks like:

Roll over

Play dead

Paw

Beg

Lie down

These are just the main tricks people use for their pets.

As a puppy most dogs can get a little bit out of hand. Their excitable side can sometimes be hard to deal with. Make sure he/she learns to calm down when needed to. My Puppy is always going crazy when ever we take her for walks. Of course shes lovely! But when she sees another dog she might as well follow them home. Make sure they learn their name and respond to it when ever.

These are the main Dog training tips i can give you. Remember these are just the basics so if your looking for training a dog for competitions its better to research this elsewhere :)

Will two dogs potty in the same place?

Yes, they can, one is trying to cover up the scent of the other dog. If you ever noticed that a male dog will sniff around before he raises his leg, and he is looking for the scent of other dogs in the area. It is the way that male dogs can smell the scent of a female dog, up to a mile away, and males will do whatever they can to get away and get to that female in heat.

How big do coon dogs get?

How do you treat a puppy with a cough and the sniffles?

A puppy that has pneumonia absolutely needs to be hospitalized! It will almost for sure die without veterinary care. If the pup is very young, this is especially true, but at any age, pneumonia is very serious. If you can't afford it, at least get the pup to the vet and see what they can do that you can afford, and see if there is a shelter or rescue that might take him and care for him.

Young pups will go downhill and die within a very short time.

What are minicher pinchers job?

What is the correct way to introduce another dog as a companion to a dog you already have?

correct me if im wrong, but from past experiances, this is what i'd do.

the first thing to remember is very important; introduce them on neutral territory. if you take your dog to your partners house, the partners dog will feel threatened and try to defend its own "territory" which could result in a fight, or injuries.

take them somewhere like a park, anywhere calming and not enclosed, because that will also make them feel defensive.

introduce them slowly, let them sniff and greet each other but keep a care full watch on their behaviour. if there is any sign of them not getting on; growling, ears back, fur on end, take them away as calmly as possible. try again after a while. if all goes well, play a game of catch with them and just let them intereact. if all goes well, they should get along and once they are used to each other you can take them to either house.

i think this is a suitable thing to do, i hope i helped and it all works out :)

Can you begin a sentence with sat?

No, sat is a verb - the past tense of sit.

You can begin a sentence with a verb if it is an imperative sentence but then the verb is in the base form not past.

eg Sit down! Look out. Clean up your room.

How do you train a terrier mix not do bit?

Hi,

Because it would be undesirable (and nearly impossible) to extinguish an instinctive reflex, the solution here is to manage the situation. If your dog lashes out when awakened by physical contact, get in the habit of clapping your hands, calling out, stomping your feet, or making some other sound from a distance to awaken your dog before you approach.

As for behavior modification, one technique is to tap your dog on the shoulder and then immediately present a fabulous treat, like a piece of hot dog or cheese. Practice when your dog is wide awake and not distracted. Do five repetitions at each session, and aim for three to five sessions per day. After a few days--or as soon as you notice your dog looking forward to your tap--try tapping and treating when he is mildly distracted. So long as he looks up, happily anticipating the treat, gradually move to more distracting situations.

What does a lead dog do?

Leads the dogs in the Iditarod race really. :-)

Why are trained protection dogs so expecive?

A few reasons 1.) If a dog costs more, than it is less likely to be abused. 2.) You are paying for breed, genetics, and temperment, years of selective breeding 3.) Good training, and on going training should cost on average 200-300% more than the actual cost of the dog.

How do you train a k-9 dog for the DRUG ENFORCEMENT AGENCY?

i heard of this man who taught his dogs to detect cancer he puts the liqid of the cancer into bandaids(2 of then like the liquid on the white patch then another to cover it on the top of that banaid) with the actual cancer then he put a whole bunch of other bandaids exactually the same then he stuck then all over his wife and then you lay the person down then you let your dog sniff them and some how the dog hit the badaid that had the cancer with his paw i suggest to put them like in a shoe, pocket, jacket and places that people actually hide there drugs not out in the open TRY TO REMEMBER WHICH ONE ANSWER:

While not completely accurate, the above answer is on the right track in some aspects. Most detection (sniffing) dogs are generally trained using similar principles with some key differences depending on the trainer's desired results. The key words to remember here are REPETITION and ASSOCIATION. You basically have the dog repeatedly perform tasks. When the dog exhibits desired behaviors, you praise it. When the dog exhibits undesired behaviors, you correct it. Sounds simple, right? It is in concept but at the same time can be a little complicated. Most trainers will start off using a set of boxes (usually 4-8) with holes cut out in the tops measuring 3-5 inches in diameter. One box is designated as the "hot box" and is the one in which the training aid is always placed. Only one box in the set should be used to hide training aids in (this is to prevent contamination.) The trainer will then have the dog stick his nose in each box (it's critical that the holes are small enough to prevent the dog from sticking its head all the way in and getting stuck.) When the dog gets to the hot box, the trainer will allow the dog to get a nose full of the training aid scent before telling the dog to "sit" (for a "passive" alert) or "get it" (for an "aggressive" alert.) If the dog obeys its trainer, it gets rewarded (either with a toy or an edible treat.) If the dog doesn't obey, it gets corrected verbally, physically or both ways. It is important to note that "physical" correction is not defined as abusing the dog. A gentle nudge on the dog's behind or tug on a leash is sufficient.

This process is repeated over and over with the order of the boxes getting switched around between each turn to prevent the dog from alerting based on memory. As time goes by, the dog relates finding particular scents with getting rewarded and it becomes a game of hide and seek.

When the dog has mastered the box exercises, it graduates to the next level. The trainer will introduce the dog to different exercises and environments. Training aids will then be hidden in buildings, vehicles, luggage, etc. The idea is to expose the dog to as many different scenarios as possible so that when they actually go out in the field and work, they will feel comfortable doing so.

When the prescribed training program is complete, the dog and handler must pass a certification test together. Each must complete a training program separately but in general no handler is permitted to work with a dog he/she has not been certified with.

One last point of interest. Despite their classification as "working" or "service" animals, the dog does not consider what it does for its handler "work." This is a point of confusion for many people as there are rumors of drug sniffing dogs being forced to consume narcotics as a motivational tool. The logic here is that if the dog is given drugs, it will become addicted and thus become obsessed with finding more drugs. This is false and absolutely ridiculous. No police K-9 trainer/handler would ever do such a thing. It's cruel, foolish and it would shorten the life of an animal that more than likely has become a member of the family. The entire motivation for the dog to search is fun and excitement. The training makes it a game, the dog doesn't need much more than that to get it going. Besides, if the rumor were true, then how are bomb dogs motivated? I've never heard of any explosive with addictive properties. ### ^ That's a good answer. I just wanted to add that most drug dogs are trained with "pseudococaine" which I believe is called, "methyl benzoate"--which is actually an IMPURITY created in the non-pharmaceutical--i.e., "bootleg" process. A drug dog therefore might not detect someone who had a PRESCRIPTION for cocaine for whatever reason. Another factor that certain Supreme Court justices have noted is that up to 65% of US Currency can be tainted with drugs to the level that a dog might detect it. So a citizen could be legally carrying tainted currency and get a positive hit from a drug dog, in theory. I.e., you could be innocent of any wrong doing and get drug-tainted currency as change, for instance.

You want to purchase a Toy Lab puppy but you are away from your home for 10 hours each weekday while you are at work What can you do and how can you potty train the puppy?

AnswerMy suggestion is to NOT get a dog if you are away for 10 hours a day. That's a lifetime to a dog. Until you work less hours or have someone to take care of it, don't get one.

^^^^

I AGREE

I did not know that there are toy labs are u sure your don't mean a chihuahua or something else????

Well what ever the previous poster is absolutely right, you should not leave a brand new puppy alone for more than 5 hours even...I don't leave my dogs for more than 4 hours a day sometimes less...

It is almost cruel to the puppy, he or she needs attention, training and something to keep her preoccupied with more than just toys, treats, food and water....Will you be able to provide the needed attention?

Also dogs need to be walked 1-2 x a day so it prevents separation anxiety which leads to bad habits, which you cannot correct if you aren't there to solve the problem when it happens...Will you be able to walk him/her everyday?

And puppies need to be fed 3 x a day until they are about 4-5 months old, until you can feed them 2 x a day in the morning and at night...Will you be able to keep up with feeding correct proportions of food to prevent bloating or over eating, which can lead to obesity? because puppies usually don't know when to stop eating, they need to be taught.

Puppies need to be taken outside numerous times a day until their bladders are large enough to "hold it" long enough. Puppies usually have to go after naps, eating, and playtime... Will you be able to take them out every single time they do each one of these activities?

If you are desparate to have a dog at least make sure you have enough money for a dog sitter to come to your house to take care of him/her....

But I don't suggest that at all unless it's every once in a while when you really need a dog-sitter otherwise your dog will only develop affection or a bond with the dog-sitter and probably only see you for what??? the 14 hours you are home and you probably spend 1/2 of that time sleeping.

DON'T GET IT and there is NO SUCH THING AS A TOY LAB. IF YOU ARE GONE FOR A Longe time don't get a puppy OR a dog since you are away 10 hours weekday!

Another opinion:

You could either have someone come and let the puppy outside during your work day, take the dog to a sitter every day, or if you have a yard, fence in an area and put a dog house in it. You could then leave the pup outside while you are gone.

Crate training while you are at home is the easiest way of potty training a pup.

1. a toy lab is a cross between and toy poodle and a labrador

2. i would consider a dog kenel where you can leave your dog there a get it pampered or a dogsitter which can both be cheap if you work less hours:)

What Brands of Puppy Food are best for German Shepherd Puppiesand how much do they cost?

Well I can't say for sure on the puppy food but I do have a recommendation for adult food. I would suggest the "Pinnacle" brand and any formula.

I have an 18 month old German Shepard, Dutch Shepard mix and he has been on this food since 8 months old when is supposed to be the earliest you can put them on adult food. When I got him he was on Purina puppy chow. I started him in protection training with a local trainer who loves GSD's and does all sorts of training. He does police dogs, personal protection, guide dogs etc, etc. I have known this trainer for over 15 years and he knows what he is talking about. When I asked him about food he said it has to be Pinnacle.

Since I put him on it he started eating better, has more energy, put on healthy muscle weight, and has been eliminating less amounts. He is now huge too. He was supposed to be the runt of the litter and no one wanted him which is how i ended up with him. Also his coat is almost blinding in the sun. kinda like those vampires in that twilight movie my fiance made me go see and i am not exaggerating. At 18 months he now weighs around 100lbs and has a 28 inch neck and is showing no signs of stopping. When he sits the top of his ears are almost at chest level to my fiance. she is like 5'4 inches tall. I know the food can't make him turn into a giant but he has remained healthy, happy and energetic through all of his growing. Also I had a roommate at the time that had a pit bull puppy the same age that constantly had diarrhea (he was also on the Purina puppy food). In less than a week he had no more problems and hasn't since.

I did some research on the food and it says that most formulas are for puppies as well as adults.

Now the drawback......price. I feed my dog the chicken and oats formula it is $53 for a 30lb bag and that is the cheapest formula.

First off I would stay away from the Nutro brand. I have friends that feed it to their pitbulls and was recommend by their vet who is a noted and trustworhty vet in our area and has saved 2 of my cats lives. However I had my GSD for 2 months when I tried to put him on a different food. I bought the Nutro and gave him some and left for work. At work I started looking up reviews on the food and found a 200 page website (here is the link http:/wwwzperiodzconsumeraffairszperiodzcom/pets/nutrozperiodzhtml ) that I didn't like at all.

A lot of the complaints were to dogs having to be put down or died because of vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration ,and neurological disorders. Needless to say I got home that morning and found my dog throwing up ever where and had horrible diarrhea. I know this is common when you change their food but i did mix it with the old food like I was supposed too. It does not change the fact that in the two months i had him he was never sick EVER! I do feed him the Nutro bones for healthy teeth and good breath (the ones in the blue box) all reviews were good on them.

Do people help dogs?

Yes, people help dogs just the same as dogs help us... we care for them by feeding them, peting them and loving them. If dogs didnt have people they would starve, get cold, and feel unloved!
