A doctor would never prescribe these drugs together except under extreme conditions which don't allow for other sedatives/pain management.
As for recreational use, this combination of drugs has been recently dubbed the Heath Ledger Cocktail, as this mixture (in low doses, mind you, was the cause of the actors sudden death. Death leading from this drug-drug interaction is more common in the elderly and anyone with depressed circulatory or central nervous conditions.
So, if this is a recreational question, the answer is yes and no. I've known people that have used signifcant amounts of each separately, and eventually they combined them. But that's not to say that they weren't playing Russian Roulette.

Effects of having OCD and taken cannabis and drinking alcohol?
It can be an effective reliever to the symptoms of OCD and has no side effects on your body unlike most of the drugs prescribed by physicians for the treatment of OCD. That being said, marijuana is still a drug and should not be abused. I myself use marijuana recreationaly and although the drug does not leave me with any physical craving, i still have a psychological craving when i am without it, all be it slight and not distracting from everyday life, it is still a craving regardless of form. What i am saying is that this and every other drug provided to us, even if by mother nature, should be respected and never abused.
Marijuana is still a very beautiful medicine which i am grateful for. It is a drug i would have no problem recommending to you or anyone, i just thought it would be best to outline the "terms and conditions". Free the weed!

What is the difference between sustained release and controlled release drug delivery system?
Time Release Technology also known as Sustained-release (SR), extended-release(ER, XR, or XL), time-release or timed-release, controlled-release (CR), or continuous-release (CR or Contin) pills are tablets or capsules formulated to dissolve slowly and release a drug over time. The advantages of sustained-release tablets or capsules are that they can often be taken less frequently than instant-release formulations of the same drug, and that they keep steadier levels of the drug in the bloodstream. The first Sustained release tablets were made by Howard Press, in Hoboken, NJ in the early 50's and the first tablets relased under his process patent were called "Nitroglyn" and made under license by Key Corp., in Florida. Today most are formulated so that the active ingredient is embedded in a matrix of insoluble substance (various: some acrylics, even chitin, these are often patented) so that the dissolving drug has to find its way out through the holes in the matrix. In some SR formulations the matrix physically swells up to form a gel, so that the drug has first to dissolve in matrix, then exit through the outer surface.
There are certain considerations for the formation of sustained release formulation:
The difference between controlled release and sustained release is that controlled release is a perfectly zero order release; that is, the drug releases over time irrespective of concentration. Sustained release implies slow release of the drug over a time period. It may or may not be controlled release.
