Why do doctors ask for last menstrual period to determine due dates?
This first week is actually your menstrual period. Because your expected delivery date (EDD) is calculated from the first day of your last period, this week counts as part of your 40-week pregnancy even though your baby hasn't been conceived yet.
Due dates have become much more accurate over the past few years; however, it is still common for the baby to be a few days or even a week early or late. Keeping stress levels down and staying off your feet during the last few weeks of pregnancy will help your baby arrive right on time.

Sperm can hang around in the female reproductive system for a couple of days after entering the vagina in sexual intercourse. This means that sperm from sex on the 20th could well fertilise an egg from the 22nd and make you pregnant, especially if your egg was early that time. However, if your egg was late, say on the 24th, then it is less likely that the man you had sex with on the 20th is the father, but as you don't know when the ovulation happened, this is only a guide!
Think who else you had sex with around that time. Did you have sex on the 21st, 22nd or 23rd with a different man? It could have more likely been him that is the father. A DNA test would help!
Apart from guessing or having a DNA test there is no real other way of knowing. Make sure you are sure before making any decisions.

There is however no problems getting pregnant soon after giving birth if you release eggs (ovulate) and have sex.
Breastfeeding releases hormones that counteract ovulation, much like the pill.

What was the day you conceived?
I wanted to add to my question. My LMP was June 3 and lasted to June 7. My periods are irregular. I had sex on June 11, 12,14,19,20,21,25,30. I had no period in July. I just thought my period was late so i had sex a few times in the beginning of July (cant remember the days - maybe July 4th and July 6th and then on July 16 but used protection. Went to the doctor Aug. 11 and was told that I was 5 weeks and 2 days pregnant. I have no clue what that means...lol when did i actually get pregnant?
