President Eisenhower warned of a corrupt group of power hungry people taking the future and freedoms of the people away by use of government contracts, the military industrial complex or by squandering the countries future to live for today. He warned of the need to pay close attention to balance of public and private needs and goals.

We see this from his speech ( The italicized words are taken directly from his speech of 1961)

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist."

"... a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity... ...The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present."

"We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. We want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow."

In closing he expressed his belief in faith in divine providence.

"You and I -- my fellow citizens -- need to be strong in our faith that all nations, under God, will reach the goal of peace with justice. May we be ever unswerving in devotion to principle, confident but humble with power, diligent in pursuit of the Nation's great goals."

What problems did Dwight D. Eisenhower face?

As president, the first problem was to end the Korean War. Prominent millionaires in Ike's cabinet and archconservatives seemed to have free rein over Ike's staff. Ike also failed to come out against the wild charges of Senator Joseph McCarthy. Atomic weapons were stockpiled during his administration and he promised "massive retaliation" against Soviet agression yet did nothing when the Red Army occupied Hungary in 1956. The Eisenhower Doctrine promised foreign aid to the Middle East. When Israel, France, and Britain invaded the Suez Canal, Ike led UN opinion against them and forced them to withdraw. He started the US backing of the French in Vietnam and then the puppet Diem regime that turned out to be unable to control South Vietnam and became corrupt. The communist revolution in Cuba, the Soviet shooting down the U-2 spy plane over Soviet air space, and the use of US troops in the Civil Rights clashes in Arkansas marred his second term.

Eisenhower liked to do most of the hard presidential work back-stage, instead of up-front and he tried to have as little government action as possible.

If your 1971 coin is a uncirculated example it may be worth about $5.00 because the 1971 & 1972 issue coins were not included in the Uncirculated Mint sets sold from the Mint in those years but in general none of the Eisenhower dollars regardless of date or mintmark struck for general circulation have no silver or are worth more than face value. Only proof and uncirculated collectors coins sold from the Mint have premiums
