Why do you think it is important to do a complete patient assessment?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You only perform a primary assessment in CPR. The primary assessment determines the immediate threats to life. The primary assessment is checking the ABC's and if there is severe bleeding. The secondary assessment is performed after threats to life are controlled. The secondary assessment is taught in First Aid.

Does in giving first aid?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

While there are first aid professionals, that are called in to help, ideally, everyone shoud know a little first aid. Knowing just a little can save a life, reduce suffering, etc. At a scene, the most experienced person should be directing the effort. However I'll often yield the floor and let someone else run it before I'll get into an argument with another rescuer at a scene. In that instance, I'll only intrude if the procedures being undertaken endanger the patient.

What are the uses of AED?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

AED is an acronym that stands for Automated External Defibrillator. It is used to stop the heart's motion via electric shock, effectively hitting the hearts "reset" button. The heart then, hopefully restarts with normal activity. An AED cannot be used when a heart is in asystole, a state of no electrical activity. Also, an AED cannot be used in a moving vehical as that affects the analysis.

Role of radio in disaster management?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Many disasters involve the crippling or destruction of normal communications methods:

  1. Telephone (especially cellphone) networks may be overloaded.
  2. Electrical power may be unavailable (especially at a disaster site).

Radios and radio systems that are portable and battery (or generator) powered can avoid the above problems.

Is spray paint in cans considered a combustible?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Flammable vs. Combustible

The words flammable and combustible have been around a long time and are constantly being interchanged with each other which is confusing.

Combustible means that something will burn.

Flammable also means that, BUT... its meaning goes beyond that. Flammable does mean something will burn, but tremendously faster and much more violently.

Therefore, spray paint, before it dries is highly flammable.

On the other hand, after spray paint has dried and cured, it would only be considered combustible, not flammable.

What should you do if you are outside during an earthquake?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When you are outside during an earthquake, it is best to just go under anything hard and safe.

If you are at a school or open area, avoid ANY trees, power lines, or buildings that could damage your head or back (or anything, really) in any way

and duck and cover. If you're in a car, stop the car and stay in the car.

Hope this helped!

When a tornado is spotted what is the warning that is put out?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A tornado watch is given out if general weather conditions favor the formation of tornadoes over the next few hours. A PDS (Particularly Dangerous Situation) tornado watch may be issued if conditions favor the formation of strong to violent tornadoes. A tornado watch usually covers an area at least the size of a state.

A tornado warning is issued if a tornado has been spotted or detected or the threat of one is imminent. A tornado emergency is an informal variety of tornado warning meaning that a large tornado is approaching a populated area and is expected to cause major damage. A tornado warning usually covers an area about the size of a county.

Tornadoes can lift people up, but they usually are thrown out of the vortex before being carried very high. Most of the people killed in tornadoes are struck or crushed by debris.

What do you do when you burn your hand?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If the burn happened within the last minute or two, immerse the hand in cold (but not freezing) water. This is to reduce the temperature of the hand -- it might still be burning. Hold it in the cold water for a few minutes, then dry by patting with a clean cloth. If it's just reddened but the skin isn't hurt, that's a first degree burn -- there's really not a lot you need to do. Treat it delicately, if you want to use a burn cream, especially one with a topical painkiller, go ahead. If you have blisters, this is a second degree burn. If one or two fingertips are blistered, and there's nothing else wrong with you, you can probably handle this at home. If they entire hand is blistered, this is a job for the ER. Somewhere in between, you'll have to make your own decision. You can always call your doctor or ER when in doubt. If you decide to treat this at home, DON'T pop the blisters. Nature will take care of that. Wrap the hand loosely and gently in clean or sterile gauze. This is to protenct the hand. Don't move the hand in such a way that flexes the burned areas. When the blisters pop, get out the sterile gear. Gently dab the wound dry, and trim away any dead skin -- and ONLY dead skin. If you have silvadene (Silver sulfazine), this is a good time to apply it. If not, gently apply betadyne to the raw, new skin, and let it air dry, then sover with a sterile gauze in order to protect and keep it clean. Some folks like antimicrobial creams. They keep the wound moist. I personally don't -- they act as adhesives for micbrobes and dirt. However, this is a matter of opinion, and there are good arguments on both sides. Keep this wound dry. Check it and re-bandage every time it gets wet or every 1-2 days. If you've burned your hand so badly that most of the surface skin is gone, and the wound has a blackened look, or the well-known "fried chicken skin" appearance, that's a 3rd degree burn. Wrap the burn very gently in sterile (if you have em) gauze or clean cloth (if you don't have sterile), and head for the ER. If you're a distance from help, and have very clean or sterile water, you can wrap the 3rd degree burn in damp strips of bandage, then in guaze. Start heading for help ASAP. Treat the victim of third degree burns for shock. Do not apply butter or oil. Except as noted above, do not apply creams. all this stuff will have to be cleaned off at the ER, and that can HURT.
