What do camels carry in their hump?

The hump(s) of a camel is their reservoir of fatty tissue. Rather than having heat-insulating fat distributed throughout the body, it is concentrated in the hump(s). The fatty tissue of the hump(s) can be metabolized for energy but a net loss in water through respiration.

Camels store fat in their humps. Most people think that they store water for when they cross the desert.

a camel's hump is a giant mound of fat, actually. In a healthy, well-fed camel, the hump can weigh as much as 80 pounds (35 kilograms)! Human beings and most animals store their fat mixed in with muscle tissue or in a layer right beneath the skin. Camels are the only animals with a hump. The hump allows a camel to survive an extremely long time (up to two weeks) without food if need be. Because camels typically live in the desert, where food can be scarce for long stretches, this is important.

The answer is obviously not water but it is fat!can you guess why it can stay long without food and stuffs?the answer is, it's fat turns to energy like it eats fat so the fat waits till the camels energy is less then it turns to fat.Not only camel can to that also us example when we do fasting and when we are ill.
Camels do not store water in their humps as is commonly believed. The humps are actually a reservoir of fatty tissue. Concentrating body fat in their humps minimizes heat-trapping insulation throughout the rest of their body, which may be an adaptation to living in hot climates.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --Some of the camel spiders are being spotted in Colorado Springs, Denver's KMGH-TV reported. Some think the spiders may be coming home in the gear of soldiers as they return to Fort Carson.

Tracy School has found three of the spiders in her home in Fountain. But the ones she found were about the size of a quarter, not a man's leg.Experts say these spiders have been in Colorado all along."We have them locally; they are an arid terrain spider," said Louise Steer from the May Natural History Museum. "They'll eat every bug in your house; they're the good guy," Steer says. They can grow up to 2 inches in size in the United States, but are much smaller in Colorado.Camel spiders are also called double jawed spiders, sun spiders, sun scorpions or wind spiders and are not really spiders at all. They are solifugids, large non-spider arachnids commonly found in arid regions. They don't have venom and eat other insects, not camels. The original photo of the camel spiders began circulating on the Internet around April 1, 2004. The University of Washington's Burke Museum investigated the photo and also offered an explanation of the spiders and the original e-mail.

How many teeth does an ostrich have?

Ostrich do not have teeth. They shift the food to their http://www.answers.com/topic/crop (a holding pocket in her esophagus), pick up their head to about ankle height, and move on. The head pecks again, this time getting small bits of gravel. Now amongst brown grass, it finds seeds. Its head moves here and there pecking up the bounty like a strange long-legged, long-necked, precisely-pecking chicken. It raises its head to its full 8-foot (2.4 m) height, peers around for trouble, and swallows. The ball of seeds, half-devoured lizard, and gravel emerges from the crop and slides slowly down its neck - stretching the neck skin as it goes - finally into ist tough muscular stomach, called a gizzard. The bits of gravel and sand that it swallowed earlier act as teeth in the gizzard and grind the hard food into manageable bits for its intestines to digest. Its gizzard content may be 45% sand and stones. All birds have gizzards and "chew" their food this way. Its 45-foot (14-m) long intestine (twice the length of a human's) is long enough to absorb practically every scrap of nutrients in the food.

Camels help people by:

  • providing transportation; for riding in deserts
  • carrying loads as beasts of burden
  • being able to travel long distances with less need to feed and water (thus, the load needed to support the animals is less than for other beasts of burden)
  • providing some protection to travelers during sandstorms because of their mass
  • finding sources of water
  • alerting with calls when a predator is near
  • being trainable, like a horse is trainable
  • being obedient to their owners' commands (example: kneeling to allow people to climb up onto them)
  • by completing a journey without breaking down, like cars do

Do the camels knees help them in the desert?

They have padded and elastic soles that help them travel on the rough terrain i.e. the desert. Their soles are also very tough and impermeable, and it ensures that they don't sink into the sand. Hope this helps!

How much do camels weigh?

I would estimate a full grown Camel would weigh 1500lbs to 3000lbs. This is based on: -camels can be 6x the weight of a llama (wiki) and llamas can weigh 280lbs to 450lbs (wiki). So that would mean 1680lbs to 2700lbs. -camels supposedly can drink 20 to 50 gallons at one time. And they can withstand at least 20 to 25% weight loss due to sweating. (wiki) So if the above were true that would mean 20 to 50 gallons of water equals 20% to 25% of a camels weight. Since water weight is about 8.3lbs a gallon. That would be 332lbs to 2085lbs. -Additionally a horse of similar height to a camel could be very roughly 1000lbs to 3000lbs according to my horse riding friend. Disclaimer: I haven't had any experience with camels and I would imagine it would be hard to get a specific weight estimation due to how much of their weight could just be water weight.
