When it comes to evolution the The American lion seems to have an intermediate between the lion/leopard and jaguar lineage meaning that it was a powerful cat having something of a lion- jaguar like build (pound for poumd jaguars are the strongest cats). they eventualy died out probably due to competition from smaller carnivores that required less energy to sustain their existence i.e cougars which remains the case with most of the larger mamals of north America like the giant short faced bear that was eventualy replaced by the brown bear, they were simply to big and could not be sustained in the ecosystem. other factors include hunting from paleolithic American Indians and the megafauna extinction at the end of the ice age.

The other large powerful cat from this similar time was the Smilodon populator of south America. Smilodon populators size also varies from Tiger sized to a size similar to the American lion (although the heaviest specimen is now at a more refined estimate of 400 KG than the previous thought 500 KG), although they were shorter (lions are generaly the tallest extant cats with modern day lions being taller than tigers) but more robustly built. the most popularized description of them is being bear like lions due to their imense muscular build as their main method of hunting was simply wrestling its prey to the ground so as to get a clean bite. though it had longer canines than the American lion it also had weaker jaws as the jaws of these cats were not evolved for power but rather precision unlike the pantherines sometimes known as biting cats who have a significant force behind those shorter caninnes. the main reason for this can be said to be the evolution, the large canines of smilodon meant they were fragile and thus to be effective a longer snout was required which meant the zygomatic arches of this cat were smaller thus meaning at best it only had the biting force of a third the strenghth of a modern day African lion. This is quit interesting as the saber tooths with the longest canines often had the weakest bites. But in order for those jaws to be effective the cat had immense muscular strenghth simply to just pin down the prey as most of its prey was larger than itself meaning that it was incredibly powerful and could easily be the strongest cat to have evolved.

Well i am sure most of the cat family is going extinct, but have not yet. While I am on the subject people need to save tigers and other cats in the world that are dying out. It is people that are killing their kind, what if you were the tiger and they were the one killing us, how would you feel about that. How would you feel if you were the one in the cage, or being separated from your family. What if your child can't even go to the zoo and see the wonderful animals like tigers, cheetahs, bob cats, mountain lions, or can't even have a house cat like you have at home with you right now, just think one after another, soon all cats and other animals will be gone. SO GO OUT AND FIGHT FOR THE RIGHTS THAT THESE ANIMALS HAVE....

I am not entirely sure whether you want to know what causes a species to become extinct, or what the term extinction means. I will reply to both. There are lots of things that can wipe out a species, including loss of habitat (they live in a swamp, let us say, but people are draining the swamps to make room for new housing projects), or disease, predation, pollution, or any combination of these or other causes (dinosaurs were probably killed by a large meteor or comet striking the Earth and disrupting the global climate). As far as the largest ones are concerned, their size implies need for great amounds of energy, which means they had to eat a lot. Ectothermic animals don't need enough food, because they produce their energy utilizing the heat of the sun. This way, however, the bigger an animal gets, the more time it takes to generate heat and this may cost its own life, because in the meanwhile other smaller predatory animals have become active and threatening. The largest dinosars had to be endothermic, in order to, at least, stay alive. Some smaller dinosaurs, like Leaellynasaura, have been discovered to have lived in low latitudes near the Antarctic circle, which means they had to be endothermic to stand the climatic conditions. Even more, some small theropods present skeletal characteristics, like V-shaped bone of the chest (Velociraptor), which connects them with birds. Their 3-digit forelimbs, 4-digit long and erect hindlimbs (built for speed) , the structure of metacarpal and their respiratory system are also signs which imply connection with birds and some theropods from China (Sinosauropteryx, Sinornithosaurus etc) even present signs of feathers or proto-feathers. Since feathers imply ability of thermoregulation and, thus, high metabolic rate, scientists believe that some dinosaurs, if not all, eventually became endothermic, even if they had evolved from ectothermic ancestors. The evolutionary connection between dinosaur and endothermic birds is also implied by the discovery that early birds had a snout filled with teeth, long bony tale and digits on front limbs (wings), as well as scaly theropod legs.
