In field hockey it is mostly to do with the area of the ball you position your stick on and the flicking of the wrist. To practice try and stand side on to the ball with your hands three quarters down the stick and just use your wrists to flick the ball off the ground. ( While you can make good arguements for Patrick Roy, Terry Sawchuk, Ken Dryden, etc., none has had the prolonged personal and team success as Brodeur.)

No doubt Tretiak was a great goalie but he never played in the long seasonal grind of the NHL . It was quite easy for a goalie of his caliber to beat the Polands and Austrias of the hockey world. As well . I was only referencing goalies of the NHL.

A ball... The original game of hockey was played in Kingston Ontario Canada by British Troops and was played with field hockey sticks and a Ball, as the game developed I presume that it wasnt practical to play with a ball and then a puck was invented... the first referrence i can find is 1876

Update: In recent years the NHL has switched this, so that the home team is wearing the darker color and the away team is wearing white. Some other leagues have followed suit, but it still varies from league to league.
