Chewing Gum

What chewing gum should be used when you have dentures?

Wrigley puts out a gum called 'Freedent' that doesn't stick to dentures. I've had it 'try' to stick a couple of times but it comes off. 99% of the time it does not stick.

What are the potential negative reactions one could have to acrylic dentures?

Dentures are generally made from 3 parts PMMA (polymethylmethacrolate) powder to 1 part MMA (methylmethacrolate) monomer or liquid. It is mixed into a dough like state where it is then packed into a split flask lost wax technique process. it is then processed in a water bath at 73C for nine hours and afterwards it is finished and polished and presented to a patient. In this particular method it is relatively unheard of to have an allergic reaction to the denture. But not impossible. Some people will still have a reaction to any free monomer that maybe left in the denture after processing. Which may present itself as the "burning mouth syndrome" or a reddening of the tissue that is in contact with the denture.

However this also may be because there are some alternative methods of processing dentures that are shorter and quicker but leave much more residual monomer for the patient to deal with after such methods of processing.

This is basic information that will be made available to the patient through the licensed dental practitioner should the patient know enough to ask. There in also lies a problem. Most people will not question a person with a Doctor in front of the name. Put as in anything that you purchase now-a-days and educated consumer is the best defense against inferior quality in a product, any product.

I DON'T KNOW. I'VE NEVER HAD THAT BEFORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do you remove a tooth without the crown?

I am not sure what you mean, but: If you are talking about the crown PORTION (top) of the tooth, if it has broken off, you have to cut with a scalpel (Bard-Parker) just a bit around the gum, then you use a periosteal elevator to loosen the peridontal ligament all around the root of the tooth, then you get forceps that have the same shape as the root you are trying to remove (sort of a birds beak) to grab the root and wiggle it around until it comes out. Hopefully, if the root is otherwise healthy, it WONT CRACK.........if that happens, you just have to take more time to remove the pieces. Now, WHY is the tooth being extracted? You (DEPENDING ON THE HEALTH OF THE TOOTH IN QUESTION) can do a pin build-up of the broken off crown, and use a 'mold' to make a stub and then do an impression, and make a new crown, you don't necessarily HAVE to extract the tooth, unless the patient is requesting it because of money constraints.

Glue back on a temporary dental crown?

I have some brief dental assistant experience. I don't want to delete the answer below, but please do not recommend anyone to superglue anything into or involving the month. A temporary crown needs to be re-cemented by your dental professional, or if that is not an option, temporary dental adhesives ARE available over the counter at most pharmacies.

Superglue is not something that should be used on any part of a living organism, the least of the worry being if you drip some accidentally on your tongue or elsewhere in your mouth. It is a VERY harsh chemical if applied to the wrong area. Cyanoacrylate can also cause an exothermic reaction with certain organic compounds, you wouldn't want that to happen in your mouth.

Bottom line: don't risk it, buy the proper glue or go to your dentist.

How long should a partial denture last?

If you look after it then it should last you for the rest of your life, but this means seeing your dentist every 6 months to once a year to have your remaining teeth cleaned and have your partial checked for any weak points. I had my partials for 25 years, but decided I wanted to get new ones that clicked behind my eye teeth instead of a wire up by the gum of my eye teeth. I take good care of my teeth, but unfortunately, genetics has a part in whether you have strong or weak teeth. I have never regretted getting my partials and take good care of them and see my dentist every 6 months.

What is a denture liner?

It is a softer acrylic under the denture, put there for sensitive gums. # Denture liners can be hard or soft, temporary or permanent. # Denture liners can be done in several ways. a) A hard reline done by a Dentist in the office chair side with self cure materials b) An impression material placed in the denture by your Dentist, and then sent to a dental lab for technicians to be replaced with permanent hard or soft relining material. c) There are also a variety of over the counter lining materials available including soft, hard and denture cushions. Caution should be used with these materials as consumers have ruined their dentures with the use of some of these products.

Why do teeth whiteners not work on porcelain crowns?

The brightness of a tooth is a function of how light is reflected off the enamel. Whitening agents work by dehydrating the enamel, that is, by removing moisture on a molecular level from within the enamel. This increases the amount of light that is reflected off the tooth, and therefore it makes them appear whiter. There is no indication at this time that this is harmful to the teeth in the long term, however, some people will experience an increase in temperature sensitivity when they whiten their teeth. Porcelain crowns and tooth-colored fillings do not bleach because the agents cannot remove moisture from them as they do with natural enamel. Over time, the moisture will return to the enamel, and the whitening process will have to be repeated to maintain the new whiteness of the teeth.

If a dental filling falls out in two months should you have to pay for it?

You should expect to pay for the filling for the first placement. If you should pay for subsequent fillings on the same tooth depends on why the filling came out. If it was due to trauma, such as getting hit in the face, then yes, you probably ought to pay for the replacement. On the other hand, if it simply broke off, it may have been that the dentist was trying to be too conservative and placed a filling where a crown was really needed. In that case, the doctor ought to credit you the fee for the filling towards the fee for the crown.

If you suspect that the dentist is simply incompetent, seek a second opinion or just find a new dentist.

What is the top of your tooth called?

the tooth which is visible above the gums is called the crown.

the uppermost layer is the enamel. then a very hard layer called dentine which protects the underlaying oulsp cavity . this contains nerves and blood vessels.

the lower tooth is divided into 2 or 3 roots depending upon the type of the tooth.

the roots contain a hard cementum which separates the root from the periodontal ligament, which in turn holds the root in place and cushions the tooth against the gum and jaw during the grinding, jarring activity of chewing.

Is it better to sleep with or without dentures?

It is much healthier for your gums to sleep without dentures. It will irritate the gums in your sleep which will result in sores on the gums. The gums need time to rest and to allow normal stimulation to maintain healthy gums. Also the dentures will collect plenty of germs in your mouth during the day, so it is good and recommended to soak them in warm water or a denture cleaner at night. Make sure to keep a routine cleaning of your dentures to insure healthy gums.

If you have a small cavity in a baby tooth that still has roots on it should you fill the cavity or pull the tooth?

The best thing would be to have a filling put in the tooth. But if the tooth is going to fall out soon, the dentist may recommend pulling it instead. Have it looked at by a dentist and then do what you think is best.

Whatever you do don't pull it out yourself. See a dentist its not that bad, honestly..lol

Fill the ToothPulling a baby tooth too early can cause other teeth to move forward and cause misaligned teeth.

It depends on the age of the child and which tooth it is. If the tooth is about to fall out, then pulling the tooth isn't a bad option. Some "baby teeth" stick around until age 11 or 12 or even 13 sometimes, so if it is a young child, pulling the wrong baby tooth could cause severe misalignment. You really need a dentist's opinion on this matter.

If this is an adult patient with a retained baby tooth, and the adult tooth never came in, well they should probably keep the tooth because there is no "replacement" on the way.
