How do you make simple paper logs for fireplaces?
You want to gather whole sheets of paper because it is easiest but half sheets or so will work. You want a good thick pile pile of paper. About mine is about 1 cm thick or 0.5 inches.
After you have your paper you need to tightly roll the paper. The less paper the easier it is to roll.
Once you have it rolled wrap the twist tie around the roll.
There you have it, a paper log. Burn at your leisure without little scraps of burning paper coming out of your chimney.

What is the most economical way to use a wood-burning stove?
use wood but not from cutting down trees but sticks a logs that are in a forest
-----
Unfortunately, the best economy for wood burning depends on the stove, how it is designed, what it is used for, and even what you mean by the word economy. It is not a question that can be answered without knowing something about the circumstances.
Using forest falls may be economical, if you have plenty of time to look for good wood among them and don't mind valuing that time at a very low rate. They usually include wood that has started to rot or otherwise go bad. Such wood does not burn well and can introduce pests into your house.
Does a fire in a fireplace burn better when the outdoor air is calm or windy?
The fire in a fireplace burns well when it is drawing well, which means it is getting a steady flow of fresh air (& oxygen) to the fire and exhaust/smoke is flowing steadily away. An open fireplace in a building needs quite a large volume air to be supplied to it (either from a draughty or well ventilated room, or through a vent), and a large exhaust through the chimney.
The wind around the building can affect the drawing of the chimney by creating high and low pressure areas. If the chimney top is in a lower pressure area than the room with the fireplace, the air will draw steadily through the fireplace and chimney, because air in a high pressure zone will want to flow to a lower pressure zone. If the chimney top is in a higher pressure area than the room, the flow will tend into the room, bringing the smoke with it.
Wind direction and speed can affect this, as can the position of the chimney opening and the ventilation of the fireplace room. A well designed fireplace should draw well in all wind strengths and directions, but many do not.
How much does it cost to run your gas fireplace a night?
Find the tag on the fireplace unit and note the Input rating, then divide that # by 1000 and the answer is the # of cubic feet of gas the burner burns in one hour. Or watch your gas meter for 60 seconds and note the cubic feet used and multiply that times 60 and again you have your cubic feet per hour #, use this method if you don`t see a tag. Be sure no other gas appliances in the home are operating while you are reading the meter. Then look at your gas bill and see what a cubic foot of gas costs you and multiply that by cubic feet per hour it uses times the # of hours you run it per night and you have your answer.
Do you need fireproof sheetrock behind a fireplace?

Does pressure treated wood mean its treated all the way through the wood or just on the surface?
The pressure drives the preservative through all of the wood. Once in use, over many years, sun and rain (or water) will leach out the preservative from the outside in.
Why does our propane fireplace suddenly smell smells like a kerosene heater?
We had the same problem and found this post: The kerosene/diesel odor is usually nothing to worry about. Especially if you are presently or have been recently using an type of petroleum based and or oil based product. It's a common after effect of using such products and usually the result of some petroleum product recently used in the home. Could be an oil based paint, a stain, wood finishing or sealer product, adhesive, sealant and or any such product, etc. Any product that contains a flammable solvent or oil based product will do this. I bet you had one of those products used in the home recently. Prior to this, the odor didn't exist and it will be gone as soon as the product dries and or cures. Until such a time as any of these type products dries and or cures, the best thing to do is ventilate the house as best as possible.

Can a wood burning stove put off carbon monoxide?
Yes and no. When wood burns, the first thing that happens is destructive distillation, and one of the products is carbon monoxide. The carbon monoxide is normally burned into carbon dioxide, producing a flame, along with other products of destructive distillation. Then the products of combustion go up the chimney.
An airtight stove can produce carbon monoxide as a combustion product if it is not allowed to get enough air to burn properly. Older airtight stoves were more prone to this than newer. The carbon monoxide went up the chimney, and not into the house, but it was an atmospheric pollutant.
In a case where the carbon monoxide fails to go up the chimney, a stove will normally just go out. There are exceptional cases where this would not happen, but proper operation of a stove would prevent it.

If the pilot light goes out on a gas fireplace does the gas keep running?
On most gas fireplaces there are two safeties, that if working properly, will keep the gas from running under the described conditions. One is a 30mv thermocouple that will hold in a pilot operator (similar to a water heater setup). The second is usually a 750mv (0.75 volts) generator that provides the power to open the main gas valve operator. If there is no flame present, there will be no power to "open" either of these. lc

How far to open damper in fireplace?
When you use the fireplace, the damper should be open all the way. If not, you probably will not get enough updraft and your house will fill up with smoke...not a good thing. When it is not in use, the damper should be closed...otherwise you will lose a lot of heat up the chimney.
