With a sterile gauze or clean cloth, apply pressure for a full five minutes without lifting the gauze or cloth to look at the cut. The constant pressure will not only help stop the bleeding, but will also help a clot to form.

However, you should replace all supplies on a use-and-replace basis (i.e. what you use, you should replace).
How much blood can someone lose before fainting?
One pint: Dizzness and headache for a day Two pints: Lasting dizziness and headache for a couple days. If I'm wrong, let me know. The funny thing is I was eager to find an answer for this question too. Not just someone's guess but from a medical student or professional. ------------------------------------------------------ The question is asked in a very open way, which makes it hard to answer with brevity. FOr instance, the primary symptom of bleeding is, well, blood -- someplace where it shouldn't be. Ans this symptom can be confirmed instantly, far before bloodloss would endanger the usual patient. The second difficulty relates to the condition of the patient before the bloodloss occurs, as well as the rapidity of the loss. A large patient (say 180lbs) can, depending on the person and the circumstances, part with as little as a quarter unit or as much as about 1 unit before some symptoms are visible. I should also add that the patient's activities post blood loss are important as well. I healthy blood donor can donate a unit, then lie down with a cookie and some OJ, and feel no apparentl ill effects. The same man, running a marathon at the time, will be in extremis. Then there's shock. An otherwise minor wound that shows a lot fo bleeding can induce shock in the patient -- and even in other patients (and observers!) who see it. Scalp wounds are famous for this. Then there's the different between blood volume (or how much blood and serum are in the circulatory system) and hemoglobin/hematocrit (how much O2 can be carried and how much space there is between red corpuscles). Bleeding causes problems with all three, and which becomes the most dangerous depends on the patient's condition before the event -- both immediately and chronically. In short, there's no real way to answer this question concisely without taking a myriad of other factors into account. That said, for a healthy human, you'll usually see effects after a unit, stronger effects after 2-3 units, and after that a need to resanguinate.

How do you stop scabs bleeding?
Good Question! Well, you could give yourself a manicure (if your a girl) so you don't want to wreck your nails by picking. You could read a good book, knit, play a video game, or do a puzzle, ride your bike, just something to keep your hands busy. If You still pick it, put prioxcide on it right away then put antibiotic on it and cover it with a bandaid. You'll might forget that the bandaid is on for a few days and you take it off and SHAZAM! It's almost gone! ---- Willpower is needed to overcome the urge to gouge out scabs - I should know ;) Remember that, by picking scabs, you will end up scarring yourself, so use this incentive to try and resist succumbing to temptation! As the answer above stated, do something - anything - to take your mind off it.
Where does it hurt when you tear your ACL?
When you tear or injure your Anterior Cruciate Ligament, you will hear a sudden popping sound and there will be a moderate to severe pain, swelling and instability of the knee feeling kind of like "wobbly." Basically, knee brace and immobilization of the affected knee is necessary. Otherwise, continued activity on a knee with Anterior Cruciate Ligmant Injury can result into devastating consequences such as massive cartilage damage, leading to a high-risk of developing Osteoarthritis in later life.
How do you use a roller bandage to cover a wound on the leg?
To cover a wound on a leg using a roller bandage, gauze must first be applied to the injury. The main point of a roller bandage is to secure other dressings for the wound. A roller bandage, as the name suggests, is rolled around the wound and then tied off. The knot should be placed directly over, or as close as possible to the location of the wound.
Can you use witch hazel on a baby?
You can, and likely with complete safety. I would recommend diluting it to 3:1 with water (3 parts water: 1 part witch hazel). However, the benefits of Witch Hazel are pretty limited and are in question, so no promises on if it will help whatever malady you're treating. The primary active ingredient is tannin, which acts in this case as a mild astringent. If a rash develops, welts etc. immediately discontinue usage. A note on all herbal and homeopathic remedies: Unlike conventional pharmaceuticals, these are often made from living organisms, and as such the contents and dosage is far more likely to vary.

Should a patient in cardiac arrest receive CPR if they have had a stroke?
ANYONE who is in cardiac arrest should receive CPR. If a stroke victim needs CPR, it means that they are in cardiac arrest, which means they're dead. What would withholding CPR do for your patient.. they're already dead at that point.

Bacitracin is an antibiotic that treats staph infection caused by a bacteria called staphylococcus (STAF-il-oh-KOK-us). Bacitracin is used in infants to treat pneumonia. It is also used to treat an infection that causes pus to build up between the lungs and the membrane that covers them. Bacitracin may also be used for purposes other than those listed. Can suboxone cause black vomit?
Nothing in the literature indicates a reason why subxone, especially administered by injection as it usually is, would cause black vomit.
Without knowing your diagnosis, I should point out that black vomit, especially when it looks like coffee grounds, may be indicative of a GI ulcer, which is critically serious.
Please contact your doctor or emergency services at 911 at once. If it is an ulcer of that magnitude, it can be life threatening. Don't wait. Call NOW please.
AnswerTo add to what the wonderful person said above...
I have seen all over the internet about how "Black Vomit" ,as it has been referred too, is a tell-tale sign of yellow fever...i want to also add that its a tell-tale sign of Ebola infection...
Granted Ebola infection is highly unlikely unless your in the depths of the African Congo...but it is still a possibility...you deffinately want to go get checked out.
The most likely problem is like the person above said, GI Ulcer would definitely give rise to the black vomit. Either way you need to get to a hospital and quickly, black vomit is NEVER a good sign.
AnswerI don't know where the first answerer is getting his/her information from, but Suboxone is not usually administered by injection. It is never administered by injection, unless an addict is attempting to abuse it. Suboxone comes in a bright orange sublingual tablet (sublingual means that it dissolves under the tongue, since it can't absorb properly in your stomach). However, I agree with the first answerer's overall point: I know of no reason why Suboxone would cause black vomit. I've been on it, under the care of an addiction specialist, for over 4 years now, and I've never heard of Suboxone giving anybody black vomit.
AnswerI'm not sure about Suboxone, but "black" vomit is hematemesis (bloody vomit) in which the blood has become necrotic. This is indicative of severe internal hemorrhage, which can be caused by a number of things, the more serious of which are viral hemorrhagic fevers (which includes Ebola and Marburg). Since those diseases are highly infectious, the most stringent care must be taken when cleaning up the vomitus so that it does not spread.
How do you surgically repair torn finger ligament?
Torn ligaments are repaired surgically. The other option is to try and become accustomed to the reduced level of activity. To treat in the field, immobilze the extremity, and raise about the level of the heart. You can immobilize a pinkie most effectively by gently taping it to the ring finger or, if you need to, you can splint it in position. A tongue depressor works well. Be sure to pad the splint. Patient comfort is critical in splinting and immobilizing limbs (because their pain can mean you're doing it wrong and perhaps doing more damage). Make sure, when immobilizing, you're improving the situation and not making it worse -- pain will be your guide. After any taping, always make sure you haven't compromised circulation. Check the tip of the pinkie to see if it's white, purple or cold. If it's healthily warm and pink, good job.

What steps should you take to care for a minor wound?
From a first aid point of view, there is not much a first aider can do. Furthermore, a first aider cannot be certain that the internal bleeding is only minor (unless it is a contusion).
In the case of suspected internal injury, treat the patient for hypovolemic shock, keep them warm and call an ambulance for medical treatment.
If the injury is minor, in the case of a minor contusion, apply an ice pack, elevate if it is a limb, compress by applying a bandage and refer the patient to a medical professional if the condition is doubtful.

Advantages of ibuprofen over diclofenac?
Ibuprofen has fewer side effects than diclofenac, though it's anti-inflammatory properties are weaker. Common side effects include gastro-intestinal discomfort (stomach ache), nausea and bleeding and ulceration. These can be reduced by taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) with food.
I must add though, you should follow the advice your doctor gave. If you turn to answers.com, you probably don't have the expertise on which to make an informed decision.
