Most fishing line is much stronger than common household string. Fishing line comes in many different sizes or "pound test" ratings, ranging from less than 1lb test to well over 100lb test. This rating indicates at what pound of pressure fishing line will break at. So, if you have 17lb test line then it should break around 17lbs of pulling pressure. Keep in mind that the test ratings are sometimes not 100% accurate and lines can break slightly below, right at, or even a bit more than the indicated rating on the package.
