Correction:
There are no "cat fleas" - fleas are fleas, and the same ones that get on cats also get on dogs and other animals. The even bite people, but since people don't have fur for them to hide or burrow in, they don't stay on them.
And yes, fleas can live in clothing. Fleas can actually live in a sort of suspended animation for a long time, even outside in the cold winter. Then as soon as they detect body heat, they are able to leap onto the body of the animal that's nearby.

How long must you submerge your cat in soapy water to drown her fleas?
I would highly recommend combing out as many as you can, calling your vet and order one "Capstar" which starts killing off ALL fleas within 30 minutes, then also order one Frontline to put at the nape of the neck 24 hours later (no earlier). This will get rid of ALL fleas.
I would wash all blankies, bedding, etc. where the fleas might have gone. They will stay off your cat with the Frontline (and initial Capstar pill), but YOU may get bit! Dang fleas, anyhoo! :o)

Where do fleas come from if not from pets?
Fleas come from eggs. Flea eggs can survive for years in carpeting, drapes, ect... Or, you may have inadvertently brought a hitchhiker in with you from outside (be it eggs or a female who had not yet dropped her eggs).
