A DS is the 1st generation of all DS'es. Being that it's so sold and it's rare and hard to find, you could buy it on Amazon or E-Bay, for cheaper than the newer DS'es nowadays. I posted the link below for the regular DS.
*Fact: The DS has a totally different structure and is not as slim as the others and it has a GameBoy cartridge holder and a DS cartridge holder. It it also the successor to the GameBoy, named "the new GameBoy". It is also more bulky than the others.

This model is easier to buy in-stores, than the previous model. You could get it in-stores or online. Well, the long and short of it is, there is no quick and easy way to do it. The stronger you get, the fewer star points your enemies give you. Really, if you wanna level up, the best way to do it is to just fight enemies until they stop paying out. In other words, I'd say:
Quick- Fight powerful enemies.
Easy- Fight a lot of weaker enemies.
There's not really a very reliable combination of the two.

The answer is $1199 or about £600, which I'm getting ready to pay an eBay seller for just such a machine. So that's the answer by definition. Willing buyer, willing seller.
As an aside, this has always been my favorite pinball machine from the 70's and I've been looking off and on for years for a good one to come up for sale.

The DS Lite is lighter, smaller, and has an extended battery life. The DS Lite no longer has backlight control through the main menu; instead, the DS Lite has 4 levels of brightness. The Power Button is now a slider; the stylus slides into the sides rather than the top. The start and select buttons have been moved to the bottom part of the console. GBA games extend past the Lite's bottom edge due to their size.
