How do you clean gas stove grates?

I usually soak them in a sink of hot, soapy water for about an hour and then scrub. I know that oven cleaner works too, but I don't like to use it.

Why does your gas hot water heater pilot keep going out?

  • This is usually caused by a bad thermocouple. The thermocouple looks like a thick, solid copper wire screwed into the gas valve on the water heater. The pilot flame heats the tip of the thermocouple, causing it to generate a minute electrical current at low voltage, which provides power to an electric valve that controls the flow of gas to the main burner. If you attempt to relight the pilot burner and it refuses to stay lit when you release the button on the gas valve a minute, or so, after the flame has been lit, the thermocouple is the most likely cause. Replacement thermocouples are readily available from most hardware stores and can be replaced by the homeowner, using simple tools, by following the instructions on the package.
  • Another cause of the problem could be a lack of air to the combustion chamber. Newer water heaters require more volume of air due to the addition of a heat sensitive diode to the thermocouple. Not enough air flowing through the combustion chamber to carry the heat up through the flue causes heat build up, which kills the thermocouple. On my water heater, I could light the pilot and the water heater would burn for 20 minutes or so and shut off. The fix included routing the flue straight through the roof and opening floor to allow more air into the water heater compartment.
  • Another possible culprit may be water-heater vent height above the roof. In some situations this may periodically result in a downdraft that could cause the pilot light to go out. If this is the case adding to the vent height may help. Note: building code states that the B vent required height is based on the roof pitch but it must be 2 feet higher than any portion of the building within 8 feet of the vent.
  • Make sure the vent cap isn't missing or rusted through on the roof, it will cause drafts and wind to blow out the pilot.

What is the value of your 36'' hardwick gas stove?

I would not let my 36 inch hardwick gas stove go for anything less than $1,000.00. It's got that cool, George Jetson, chrome, probably made around 1960. Works like a charm. No plastic parts!

Can you use a 50A outlet from a gas range for a new gas and convection range when the specs are for 30A?

NO!

Use only a circuit that has a breaker for the correct amperage. To avoid the risk of a house fire you must change the breaker to the required 30 amps. <><><>

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed.

If you do this work yourself, always turn off the power

at the breaker box/fuse panel BEFORE you attempt to do any work

AND

always use an electricians test meter having metal-tipped probes

(not a simple proximity voltage indicator)

to insure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOB

SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY

REFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

Is a flex pipe illegal to use on a heating gas range I was told by the Philadelphia Gas Works to replace my flex pipe.?

For the purpose of cleaning behind a stove (great hygiene) one would think a flex pipe would be the thing to have installed. There must be approved flex pipes for use with natural gas in the home. Most travel trailers equipped with propane gas have such flex lines as the rigid line would certainly break over time and rough roads.

How do you install a 240V hookup if there is a 120V outlet where you are replacing a gas stove with an electric one?

Get an electrician to wire you up a 220v line.

Yes, with a caveat. The current ratings must be the same, and the the 110V outlet must be a dedicated circuit, i.e. nothing else on that breaker. You can safely upgrade a dedicated 110V 15A circuit to a 220V 15A circuit by re-using the same wiring. You will have to just replace the breaker and the outlet. You cannot, however, increase the current load or have a 110/220V (4-prong) outlet. Note that if you move a non-dedicated circuit up to 220 you will start a fire.

What should you do if you have left a gas stove burner on with no flame?

First, do NOT light the burner-- or any flame. Second, open the doors and windows to circulate fresh air into the room and let the gas escape. While waiting for the fumes to exit, call your local fire department and ask how long you should air the room for. You need to air it until you can no longer smell the gas.

Is it dangerous to keep the windows closed while someone is cooking with a gas stove?

Unless you are in a new extremely tight house and using every burner on the stove plus the oven, there is no problem. Compared to the amount of air in a room/house what a stove uses to burn is very little and there is always some venting to the outside somewhere.

I have been cooking with a gas oven and cooktop for about 50 years, and have never had a problem with it in the manner asked in the question. You imply that the gas will somehow be floating around in the room where you are cooking, and that you will be breathing it in, or perhaps it will ignite with a spark, somehow? Unless your gas oven and/or gas cooktop are leaking gas into the room, you will be perfectly safe using them in a closed room. During the winter cold weather, I have the room closed, keeping the cold out. That is, until the room gets hot from baking in the oven! Then, I open windows for a breath of cool air. I have used both the gas cooktop and an electric cooktop, and I love using the gas, and I hate using the electric! When I turn on the eye of the gas cooktop, it comes on immediately. When I turn on the eye of the electric cooktop, it comes on after awhile. It takes several minutes for the electricity to rise to an even heat all around the eye. I'll take gas cooking any day!

IN ADDITION:"You can't see or smell carbon monoxide, but at high levels it can kill a person in minutes. Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced whenever any fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood, or charcoal is burned. If appliances that burn fuel are maintained and used properly, the amount of CO produced is usually not hazardous. However, if appliances are not working properly or are used incorrectly, dangerous levels of CO can result. Hundreds of people die accidentally every year from CO poisoning caused by malfunctioning or improperly used fuel-burning appliances. Even more die from CO produced by idling cars. Fetuses, infants, elderly people, and people with anemia or with a history of heart or respiratory disease can be especially susceptible. Be safe. Practice the DO's and DON'Ts of carbon monoxide." epa.gov

Where can you get an owner's manual for a Sears gas stove?

When it comes to old stuff, Sears is pretty good about being able to track down parts, owner's manuals and other such things. They have a web site, and a toll-free number to help you with stuff like this. Give them a click or a shout. A link is provided.

<><><>

The easiest way (this is coming from a former Sears associate in the appliance department) is to go to the Related link shown below, log in, and there's a tab for owners manuals. Enter the entire model number (located inside the storage drawer) and it will bring up a copy of the manual which can be printed off the site.

What makes your gas range burners to go poof when you turn them on?

When gas begins to flow from the pressurized manifold through the valve that has just been turned on, it begins mixing with air in a "space" called a venturi. The gas and air are flamable, but the mix has yet to be ignited. The gas/air mixture "tumbles" along in the delivery conduit until it comes out the little holes in the burner itself. Recall it is yet unignited. The fuel/air mix reaches the piezoelectric (spark) ignitor or the pilot light, and the "ready-to-go" mix is suddenly ignited. The flame front quickly travels back along the outrushing mixture until the "flame base" is established at the little holes in the burner itself. That "backward rushing" flame front leaving the ignition source is moving very quickly. The fuel/air mixture burns so fast it actually creates a mini-explosion, and the shockwave makes the poof! as the burner comes on.

What is the scientific name of gas in a gas stove?

There are a couple that are common in the U.S. If gas comes into your house from an outside tank, your stove is probably burning propane. If there is no tank, then you probably use natural gas, which is mostly methane.

Some small portable stoves burn butane.

I think that some localities may have other gases available.

Are electric ranges better than gas ranges?

They both have their upsides and downsides. Electric ranges are cheaper depending on how much your electricity costs, but gas ranges are much better at heating things up quickly and don't need to warm up.

Is a gas stove more energy efficient than electric?

There are many ways to look at this problem like upstream and downstream effects or just price wise. I'm sure someone out there has an easy answer. If the cost is lower the government might have invested more money into making that form of energy more efficient.
