German Shepherd Dogs with white coats are not accepted by many kennel clubs, particularly the AKC. Despite this, the snowy shepherd has a worldwide following that is pushing to have it recognized as a separate breed or as a viable color for the GSD. There are two clubs in North America that promote the white German Shepherd.

The white GSD has nearly the same standard as the regular GSD, except, of course, for the color. In addition, to differentiate the dog from an albino, a white German Shepherd should have dark eyes and black lips, eyelids, foot-pads and nose, with dark nails. Black, blue or gray skin is desirable.

White supposedly adversely affects a dog's working abilities. A white dog blends in with sheep or goats, lessening its visibility and herding effectiveness. Also, a white coat stands out against a grassy or brushy hillside, making the dog an easy target for prey animals.

So basically apart from having to put sun screen on the ears and perhaps bathing her/him more the White German Shepherd is no different to any other colour, it isn't possible to get an Albino as they have pink eyes whereas the dog your talking about only as white fur. It's a common mistake.

Assuming the chihuahua doesn't belong to someone who likes to dress up their pet, they can loose heat much more quickly than a German Shepard for two reasons:

GSD have a wolf-like double coat, which protects them from heat loss;

Chihuahuas have a lower body volume/surface area ratio, which means that they have much less body size for the amount of skin they have covering their bodies. Because of this, they will loose heat much more quickly than a GSD so it's ideal that they wear a doggie coat during cold days.

Since its already an adult it will be harder but just walk it alot of days like once everyday. You might have problems like the dog pulling you or tangling you. Dont let the dog get to far or he can choke on the leash.

Keep checking your local Newspaper and the internet on Petfinder but only with a reputable breeder. A lot of internet 'breeders' can turn out to be puppy millers.

a German Shepherd should get at least two walks a day each walk should be at least 30 minutes if the dog was fixed those dogs usually have a different metabolism so they usually can't burn off fat easy if the dog was from a breeder ask if the family of that dog have obesity problems.

That depends on the pups parents (their conformation to breed standards, if they were show dogs, how well they placed in shows)

And what the pups natural conformation is. The pup is worth more if it is AKC registered, AND the parents have good show records.

German shepherd by far. trust me. i take care of my neighbors malamute (basically a husky) and i still want to get a German Shepherd more than a husky.

This is a little background detail behind the question I've posed. If anyone has been in a similar situation I'd greatly appreicate your advice!

My husband and I are thinking about getting a dog. I want a dog that will be loyal and protective of our family, but that will also be great with our future kids. We aren't planning on starting a family for a couple of years. Is it ok to get a German shepherd first? So many of the things I've found talk about socializing the dog in the puppy stage. How can we get our shepherd used to kids when we have none? Especially since toddlers are known for not being gentle with pets (i.e. tail pulling, eye poking, ear grabbing) and also are not very steady on their feet and will want to hang on the dog etc. Taking our new dog to the park or a public place will not create this interaction with others. Has anyone out there gotten the shepherd first and had kids second, and if so was everything ok?

I feel like my husband and I could both readily train the dog to respect us as the boss, I'm just afraid of how it will respond to a baby/toddler who does not know how to teach such things yet.

Yes they are very smart dogs. German shepherds are used for many things such as drug dogs, police dogs, seeing eye dogs, guard \ watch dogs, and etc. German shepherds are great dogs they are loving, protective, and amazing dogs.

A Miniature German Shepherd is not currently a recognised breed. Smaller, similar breeds to a German Shepherd are:

1) Shetland Sheepdog

2) Belgian Laekenois

3) Belgian Malinois

4) Belgian Tervuren

5) Silhoh Shepherd

6) Belgian Shepherd Dog

Each breed can have a varying price range. Pedigree dogs with Kennel Club papers are on average 40% more expensive than non-registered puppies.

Female GSD's have more attitude to them and is very much a family dog. They are more stubborn and have aggression problems before/after they go into heat.

Male GSD's "attach" themselves to one person who they will stalk. As long as you get them neutered from a Young age, you shouldn't have many problems.

Those can be signs of pregnancy, but it doesn't mean you are pregnant. Wait another day or two and if you haven't gotten your period take a home test. If you are still unsure go see a doctor. I normally have very regular periods and last month, I was a week late. So late isn't always pregnant. A breeder that has a dog's hips evaluated is going to extra lengths to ensure the dog is healthy and doesn't have any genetic faults. These dogs are typically more expensive since they are usually health guaranteed.

A responsible breeder will have these health checks done, and a back-yard breeder will not. The responsible breeder's dogs will be healthier, and more expensive. The back-yard breeder does not health checks, and will sell puppies for less money.

However, just because a dog is more expensive, doesn't mean that the dog has good hips. Before purchasing any dog, ask the breeder for hip certification on the parents. Also ask for certification on the eyes and elbows. If these are not available, reconsider buying the dog, since there is no guarantee that the hips will be good.
