Why does my fish have black spots all of the sudden?
Black spots on a fishes body is a symptom of black spot disease( a disease caused by a digenetic fluke. It will usually go away on its own, as the complex life cycle of the fluke can not be completed in an aquarium.
Why do your cold water fish keep dying?
This question is rather difficult to answer, being that there is really nothing to go off of other than repeatedly dying fish. One of the fish probably introduced a viral, or bacterial, pathogen into the tank which has spread to the other tankmates and consiquentely caused them to die. Raise the salt concentration in the tank to 0.3% and treat the tank for parasites using an antiparasitic. It is also recommended to, if a bacterial pathogen is suspect, feed the fish an antibiotic food. If this does not help and all the fish die anyways you'll want to sterilize the tank before adding any new fish. You can do this using bleach as long as you let the tank sit for a couple days afterward.
i like the above answer however, i have an extensive knowledge of tropical fish-keeping and know about the benefits of using bleach as a cleaning agent & have thought about it but would never use it, to much risk involved.
cold water fish are for beginner's, i would recommend getting a water test by taking a clean bottle half full of your tank water to your local reputable fish shop.
Your goldfish is always at the top of the tank gulping at the surface is this normal?
If the water the fish is in is not changed regularly a goldfish will do this because the oxygen in the water is too low for the fish to absorb it through its gills so it gulps air from the surface of the water. Make sure you change the water in a fish bowl or get an air bubble pump for an aquarium and this will stop this behavior in your goldfish.
Goldfish always go to the top for oxygen. They are known to do this. This is why it is recommended you do not have a really tall tank. I have gold fish and never have a tank over 16 inches tall. In my 40 gallon that is 36" Long x 16" High x 18 " Deep. I have two gold fish that are about 3 inched long in size. But one is a black moor. Both go to top for oxygen even though I have two filters, a 45 and 40, plus two sponge bubbler filters, and two long bubblers in back of aquarium. They are quite healthy and never sick. In fact I saved them from Walmart some time ago. I do know it is better to have a tank that is not tall and goldfish will always go to the top for oxygen. They require more oxygen than many fish. I have another 4 foot long tank that is only 12.5 inches tall with black moors. They too, (as a species of gold fish) go to the top for oxygen. I keep water in top perimeters. and water change as needed. But if your fish show floating signs, give the fish peas. I give my fish peas once a week to keep them from having a swim bladder issue, but if they do, peas cure over night.
Try to have moving water as this creates oxygen. Try to have a tank that is not too tall. I have been told it is best to feed goldfish grandular food or pettet food. Not Flakes! My research has told me flakes can cause swim bladder issue in goldfish..
How much water does goldfish need?
It depends on the goldfish.. For ones that stay small you should have at least 10 gallons.. The bigger the goldfish gets the more water it needs. Those one and two gallon bowls do not cut it..

Why do goldfish lay on their backs?
Your fish is struggling, and probably near the end of its life, if you have not already discovered that. There is an outside chance that something from the pet supply store could help your fish, but I would not put a lot of hope in that possibility.
How do you dispose a dead goldfish?
First of all, you could probably just take it back to the pet store. If you really need to kill it, the most humane way is to add some clove oil to the water. It will kill the fish quickly and painlessly.
Can you put female bettas with other fish?
Yes, females areusually not aggressive, but if they are than you should take them out, but besides that they should have no problem being with other fish, but the males are not as aggressive as everyone thinks. The male Bettas will ONLY attack other Bettas or fish with long, flowing fins BECAUSE they mistake them for another male Betta.
Why do the fish have a swim bladder?
The swim bladder is in animals that need something to help control their buoyancy. Sharks do not have swim bladders because they do not need this.
Yes, goldfish eat their young. This is why they lay so many eggs- most of the fry won't reach adulthood because other goldfish/fish will eat them. In pond Goldfish reproduction it is the ultimate case of "Survival of the Fittest".
Goldfish are a very common species available from most pet shops and online fish sellers. Due to their popularity it will be very rare that none are in stock. People who shop for them online are often seeking fancy varieties. Here you can find an assortment of goldfish breeds for sale. Below you will find a link to where you can buy goldfish along with information on this coldw ater fish.
Can goldfish live in heated tanks?
A goldfish is a cold water fish, so it does best when it is in cooler water. Any goldfish forced to live in a tropical fish setting will probably live, just like you can live outside when it's very hot in the summer, but it will not be the healthiest, happiest goldfish it can be, just like you would rather be in the air conditioning.
How does a goldfish survive in the wild?
In nature there are many kinds of tiny macropods, microscopic algaes and other things in the water when goldfish breed in spring under normal/wild conditions. These 'baby goldfish foods' can be purchased at most good pet shops
it is best not to mess with the temperature of the water... Goldfish like solid temperatures, it is best to keep the temperature around 75-78 degrees.
Goldfish, are, however more active in warm water, because the heat from the water increases their metabolisms. This actually decreases their lifespan and is dangerous.
Goldfish are more active in warm water than cold.
Does the size of a fish bowl has an affect on how large a goldfish will grow?
Some types actually will limit their growth to their envoirmental surroundings, i.e. Space, food availibility, etc. Some types will grow normally until a certain size is reached and then continue to grow at a slower pace until it overgrows its container. Then there are types of fish that will just grow period. These are called tankbusters.
i think that's a bit like saying if i put a baby in a shoe box would it stay that small!
im not a biologist, so maybe im wrong, but a fish isn't going to naturally stop when it runs out of room. Its going to grow to its natural size... but chances are most cramped-up fish will die before they reach this size because of lack of space, lack of food and unnatural treatment.
Always research how big your fish will get before you buy it and make sure you can cope with it... fish arent toys and they don't deserve a horrible life. :) tom
I have heard this questiion over and over and the answer is simply no. what causes fish to become stunted are the high nitrate levels associated with too small a tank, not the size. either way, purposefully stunting a fish's growth is cruel,as the fish's organs will eventually fail. if you don't have a large enough tank, don't buy the fish.
P.S. i agree with tom.
EDIT:
Basically what we all want you to know, get the biggest tank you possible can, and the least amount of fish your gut allows. I always recommend tanks 100 - 350 gallons, they are most universal. Larger tanks are for real experienced people.
Does light affect the color of a goldfish?
If the white is inside the eye, it is probably cataracts. There really isn't anything you can do except keep him as healthy and happy as possible. They are often genetic, or sometimes are caused by infection or injury. If the white isn't inside the eye, but on the outside, it could be from toxins like ammonia and/or nitrite. They burn the skin, eyes and gills. If the tank can't balance completely they will be elevated. This can happen when a tank is kept "too clean". I know it sounds strange, but if you are removing all the water and totally cleaning it every month, it never has the chance to build a healthy beneficial bacteria balance. Changing 25% of the water every week while vacuuming the gravel is a good regimen to follow. You should never have to remove all the water unless there is a serious pollution problem or a foreign substance has gotten in the water. If you are finding a lot of crud in the gravel, it means you are overfeeding. (Very common problem, I overfeed sometimes too.) If he has a hard time finding food, it is easy to overfeed because you will want the fish to get enough. Just do the best you can. They do have a sense of smell, so he can find it when he needs to. Feed sinking pellets if you don't already. Pellets come in many different sizes. Get one that fits in his mouth. He can find them before they disintegrate in the gravel and there will be less waste that way. I always recommend the sinking kind instead of floating pellets because goldfish suck in too much air if they are getting the food from the top. It can cause fatal indigestion.
If it were my fish and it looks like a outer eye infection, I would try cutting back on food and add aquarium salt to the tank. Use uniodized pure salt. You can buy it at local fish stores. Put in 1/2 teaspoon per gallon. When you make water changes, put back enough salt to treat the water replaced. For instance, your water changes are about 3 gallons, so you will add back 1.5 teaspoons every time. The salt helps the fish fight infection and it can also help kill the cause of infection. It is always best to avoid medicine when ever you can. Especially in chronic cases, hope this helps, i had a fish that lost both its eyes, looks horrid.
What is the niche of the goldfish in it's ecosystem?
it is to get the food before it all gets eaten and also survive on its own without getting eaten by other animals
How many goldfish for a 30 gallon tank?
It can't be done. Goldies get huge unless they are the facy kind. Try a pond or get five in a thirty gallon.
How do you clean your 3 gallon fish tank?
That all depends on what is dirtying it in the first place. If you mean strip down and clean properly then any none abrasive cleaner will do the job provided you scrub all traces of the cleaner away before using the tank. If on the other hand you are refering to algae on the face of the tank then any of the glass cleaning equipment/scrapers sold in pets shops for that purpose should do the job. The new acrylics used are just about as hard as glass and should not scratch if you use sensible scrubbers.
What color is a female goldfish?
It can be either these days due to some intensive breeding schemes, but it is typically the case that females have shorter finnage and duller colours (but as i said earlier this isn't always the case these days- your best bet would be to take a photo and ask at you local fish specialist
How much sand do you need for a 55 gallon tank?
The amount of sand depends upon the design of your waterscape. I always have at least 3 inches of sand at the back and slope the substrate towards at least 1 inch deep at the front of the tank.
