What is the purpose of a video card?

Video cards exist to connect a computer to a monitor and to provide a display to the monitor. There has to be a way to convert the signals available on a computer's bus to the types of signals a computer monitor needs. So this is what a video card does.

Accelerated video cards help take the strain off of your computer when your playing a game with really good graphics. They do this by having dedicated rendering circuitry inside the GPU so the CPU doesn't have to do this work.

Is a Graphics card a PCI card?

Yes and No. A Graphics Card is another name for Video Card. Graphics Cards (or GPUs for short) are manufactured to more than one expansion slot interface. PCI is one of the oldest, if not first, interfaces for GPUs. Currently, GPUs are being manufactured as PCI-Express x16 interface.

There are also version (revision) 2.0 cards, which are called PCI-Express 2.0 x16. They are all compatible with motherboards that have PCI-Express x16 slots. But to take full advantage of the speed of 2.0 cards, it's recommended to buy a newer motherboard.

What is a good graphics card you would need to run Aion decently?

I currently have a Nvidia Geforce 8600GT 1GB. With that I have ran Aion at high settings with minimal lag and FPS in the high 40s. Maxed out I ran Aion with a bit of lag in city as well as only 20 FPS outside of cities. So anything equivalent or higher is a good card. Make sure you have at least 2 GB of DDR2 RAM or better for your ram slots or you'll run into trouble with memory issues.

If it is not detected google ubuntu and the model number of your hardware there is likely to be documentation for its installation

My present video card is Intel HD graphics 3000 mobile. Can I increase or change my video card for a HP Pavilion g4-1104dx?

If you have a different Pavilion g4 of the same generation, you can change the motherboard from 1 laptop to another. But that would NOT change you graphics card since they would both be Intel HD 3000.

Thats a good card and can play some games pretty well. If you need better you are going to have to buy a new laptop such as an MSI gt683, gx660, gx640.

Can you emulate pixel shader?

If you have a very fast processor and a good amount of ram, you may be able to get around the pixel shader requirement by downloading "3DAnalyze" or "Swiftshader 2.0" to emulate pixel shader.

Doing so only transfers the load onto your CPU, so unless you have a hugely powerful system, emulating pixel shader is not likely to result in acceptable performance. Furthermore, emulating pixel shader can result in system instability as the emulators must make drastic changes to the way your OS handles graphics.

What can I do to prevent my graphics card from crashing?

You could try using a different version of the video drivers. Most often, you want to move forward and keep up to date but there have been some occasions in which using an earlier version of the drivers actually allowed more stability. Research your specific card's drivers on the Internet and see what other owners suggest as a stable version of your driver.

On another note, if you have a card based on an nVidia chipset, then you might consider swapping it out for an AMD-based card. In my professional experience, I have found the AMD drivers to be much more stable. nVidia cards oftentimes lock up and crash so that the screen resets to basic 800 x 600 VGA and the only way to correct that is to reboot the computer. I've never seen that with AMD drivers (and I've been in the business for over 25 years by this point).

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions or would like further suggestions, feel free to drop me a line.
