Do you get any sleep in delta force training?
Yes. I have obviously not done it but, as the training program is rumoured to be over a year, I doubt the candidates are kept awake for all of it. However, as with most special operations training programs Im sure sleep deprevation often plays its part.
Have any Navy SEAL's been killed in action in 2009?
Upon reviewing online casualty lists from both Iraq and Afghanistan, to date (August 14, 2009) there have been no SEAL's apparently KIA this year. The worst SEAL losses were likely in 2005, when several members of SEAL Team 10 were KIA when their helo was shot down while attempting to reinforce a SEAL recon team under fire.
However, it's important to keep in mind that most SEAL missions are highly classified, and in many cases casualties aren't reported publicly until the mission is over and the members debriefed, and the family notified. So it's entirely possible there may be an unknown number of SEAL casualties we may not know about yet.
How do you the tasks of green beret differ from that of SFOD-D?
SFOD-D is Delta Force which is primarily a counter terrorism unit specializing in hostage rescue tactics. Special Forces Groups specialize in foreign internal defense, counter insurgency operations and special reconnaissance. Special Forces personnel endure over a year of training (2years for 18D Medical Sergeants) and are then placed in a Special Forces Group. Each Group is assigned a separate regional area of the world and each member speaks the local language of that area and masters the local customs to assimilate into the local culture. Where Delta usually kicks in doors and conducts quick raid style operations, Special Forces are primarily teachers and instruct local militia forces and turn them into formidible fighting forces, in-turn creating a large force of indigenous personnel to conduct missions. Using these local fighters to wage war reduces the need of risking American lives to resolve foreign problems and allows the locals most affected by the struggle to directly make a difference in their own country. Don't be misunderstood, Special forces personnel can still kick doors with the best of them but they are specifically designed to infiltrate deep within foreign nations to gather intelligence, train local forces and conduct military operations long before conventional troops are deployed. Another difference is that Delta usually conducts quick in and out missions whereas Special Forces can spend anywhere between 6 months to years in another country conducting operations. Special Forces personnel are highly flexible and therefore an invaluable asset to strategic military planners and theatre commanders.

-----------------------
Yes and no. From the physical requirement standpoint, yes, being a Ranger will definately help you through Selection and the Q Course. HOWEVER, SF looks for a different type of soldier, with different personality traits than the Rangers look for. Sometimes being a Ranger (and having a "Ranger mentality") can hurt your chances of selection.
Is Army Rangers or Army Special Forces more challenging?
Each is difficult in their own way. RIP/Pre-Ranger and Ranger School are very high intensity, physically demanding courses which last a fairly short time, while SFAS the Q-Course are less intensive but more challenging mentally over a longer duration of time.
Is it better to join the green berets as a civilian or as an army soldier?
Its better to join the Green Berets as a Army Solider because you will get more experience and have a better chance of making it through the selection process and training.
Civilians can not join the Green Berets. The GB's are Soldiers, not civilians.

SOPC is a thirty day course at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, designed to prepare soldiers for the second level of SF training, SFAS (Special Forces Assessment and Selection. Emphasis is on physical conditioning and land navigation. # SFAS (Special Forces Assessment and Selection) - SFAS is the 24 day survival training portion of SF Training. Candidates are assessed physically, mentally, psychologically, and emotionally. Completion of this level, passes the soldier on to the third tier. ## Individual Skills Training - IST is comprised of land navigation, small unit tactics, and live-fire training exercises. ### 18B - Special Forces Weapons Sergeant ### 18C - Special Forces Engineer Sergeant ### 18D - Special Forces Medical Sergeant ### 18E - Special Forces Communication Sergeant ### 18F - Special Forces Assistant Operations and Intelligence Sergeant ### *Additionally there is a Special forces Enlistment Option open to new recruits. 18X is not an actual MOS designation, however it entitles the recruit soldier to try-out for Special forces training. There are five options: ## Collective Training - Composed of SF Doctrine and Organization training, Unconventional Warfare Operations, Direct Actions Operations, Airborne and Airmobile Operations. Soldiers are assigned to ODA's (Operational Detatchment Alphas) through which common and specialty skills will be evaluated. ## Language Training - soldiers are trained and evaluated for proficiency in at least one foreign language. ## SERE (Survival, Resistance, and Escape) Course - It is what the name implies, and is the toughest portion--mentally, physically, psychologically, and emotionally--of training and assessment for all Special Forces candidates. Completion of the SERE Course ends training. # SFQC (Special Forces Qualification Course) - This is a five phase training course:

Beret's are between 20-30. Anyone in the army is age-eligible to become Ranger qualified. Doesn't mean everyone who goes through can pass the training though. Don't know about SEALs and Delta Force. They are the grizzly old vets though so they're probably older.

Special forces packet Chance of getting it?
The chance of getting selected for a special forces packet depends on various factors such as the size of the applicant pool, the specific qualifications and requirements, and the overall competitiveness of the selection process. Generally, the selection for special forces units is highly competitive, and only a small percentage of applicants are chosen for training and entry into these elite units.
How do you become a green beret?
Army Ranger Not true. There are LOTS of SF soldiers who've never been in the Rangers. There are essentially two ways to join Special Forces: from inside and from outside. First you must meet the criteria--and there are a lot of them, like being a US citizen, on active duty or going there, pass an SF physical, go airborne, so on and so forth. And you need to be able to swim 50 meters in your uniform and boots. (Hint: The Special Forces swim test contains an event where you get on a high dive board wearing your uniform, a rucksack and a blindfold. To pass this event, you must walk off the end of the diving board, land in the water, remove the blindfold and rucksack, and swim to the side of the pool. This one event kept me from joining Special Operations Command; I can't go off even a low diving board, much less a high dive.) Once you've done all of this, if you're not in the army yet you join and go to infantry school. You then attend the 30-day Special Operations Preparation Course, or SOPC. Here you learn very advanced land navigation and do a lot of physical training. Next step is Special Forces Assessment and Selection--a 24-day job interview at Fort Bragg. Officers who pass this go to their branch's Officer Advanced Course if they haven't already been; enlisted go back to their home station to await assignment orders to the JFK Special Warfare Center and School. All SF candidates then attend the Special Forces Qualification Course, or the Q Course. This is a school that varies in length; the Medic course is nearly a year long. It used to be that once you passed the Robin Sage exercise you were a Green Beret; now you must attend language school and the Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape course to be considered fully qualified.
