In 1973, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) initiated a research program to investigate techniques and technologies for interlinking packet networks of various kinds. The objective was to develop communication protocols which would allow networked computers to communicate transparently across multiple, linked packet networks. This was called the Inter-netting project and the system of networks which emerged from the research was known as the "Internet." The system of protocols which was developed over the course of this research effort became known as the TCP/IP Protocol Suite, after the two initial protocols developed: Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP).

Its origin began in the 1950's. Faced with the threat of the cold war, US military devised ARPA. ARPA later on commisioned MIT to create networks.

The end product was ARPANET. The network was small and its nodes includes UCLA and NASA. In 1973, ARPANET became global by getting in connection with London University. In the 1970's the history of internet had began and email became possible and UNIX was created.

A local area network (LAN) provides connectivity between computers within a small geographic area (typically no larger than a building). Other types of networks include:

- Campus Network (connects a number of buildings together)

- Metropolitan Area Network (connects computers around a large city size area)

- Wide Area Network (connects computers from around the world)

Generally speaking the larger the area covered, the slower the network. Although there are some links within the Internet that are significantly faster than an average small home network would provide.

Most companies deploy LAN networks to connect up employee's computers so that they can reach corporate email servers and applications.

Most home users deploy LAN network to share files (e.g. photos, music) between their computers and to share a single Internet connection between multiple computers.

Nothing did. Tim Berners Lee did not get the idea of the internet. He invented to World Wide Web, which is not the same thing. Other people invented the internet. The World Wide Web is just one part of it. He invented the World Wide Web and added it into the internet.

The difference is that when you type something up in the World-wide web then it will tell you results that occur on the internet from all different worlds and languages.... internet only does what you know it does

The definition of the "first ISP" is kind of fuzzy, but Autonomous System Number 1 is currently owned by Level 3. Originally it was owned by GTE Communications, but they were acquired by Level 3 a long time ago.
