What are the chances of a mare giving birth to a stallion colt?

Theres a 50% chance it will be a filly and 50% it will be a colt.

Do animals such as horses get a period like humans and if so do they actually bleed like can you see the blood coming out?

No. Horses, specifically mares, go into what is called estrus, which is a reproductive stage in which they are receptive to getting bred to a stallion. They do not bleed out nor shed the uterine lining like a female human does. They may bleed a little bit after estrus, but not so substantially nor noticeably like with women or female dogs.

What is a mustangs ability to breed in captivity?

All horses no matter the breed have the capacity to breed in captivity as long as they are reproductively intact.

How soon can you tell if breeding is successful?

If the breeding is planned the earliest you can tell if the mare is in foal is based on the quality of your veterinarian's ultrasound machine. Better systems can determine

pregnancy at around 10 days post ovulation. Most systems work well at 14 days post ovulation.

If the pregnancy is unplanned (and unwanted) there are 2 options.

1) Have the veterinarian determine the approximate date of ovulation, wait 5-7 days and give the mare a prostiglandin shot. This will disrupt the CL and the mare

will return to heat. If there was a conceptus (pregnancy) it will be disrupted.

2) Tease the mare starting 14 days from when she went out of heat post accidental

breeding. If the mare does not come back into heat, contact your veterinarian and ask him/her to give your mare a prostiglandin shot.

An unwanted pregnancy in a mare can be easily aborted until endometrial cups form at around 35 days, however earlier is better.

When a sire from one breed is bred with a dam from another breed?

You get a crossbreed foal. For instance, if you bred an American Walking Horse and a Mustang and you got a colt, it would be an American Walking Horse X Mustang colt. This is said as, "American Walking Horse Mustang cross". At least I think so.

Do mares have periods?

Not in the scientific sense - a human female's period is when the lining of the uterus is sloughed off after the ovum is not fertilized. Mares do not go through a cycle of uterine wall build-up then sloughing, so they do not have periods. However, mares do go through heat cycles approximately every 21 days in which the mare is fertile and receptive to intact males.

What age can a bottle feed foal be taken off milk?

Most orphan foal milk products are designed for the foal to be weaned at 2 to 3 months of age (about the same amount of time a foal gets it's primary nutrition from mare's milk). While the foal can be fed milk supplements through the 6th month the amount needs to be reduced as solid feed intake increases to limit inflammation of the growth plates.

Do vets try to calm pregnant horse when in labor?

Usually not...horses, (like most birthing animals), are calm during the foaling process unless there are significant problems with the birthing process.

Much of this is mediated by the hormones released before and during labor and

foaling.

If the mare has a malpositioned foal (dystocia) the veterinarian may administer

drugs that make it easier to reposition the foal. These may include tranquilizers

and or muscle relaxants.

How many months is 20 weeks pregnant?

If you suppect your horse is pregnant about 9 or 10 months and you had a scan what would the scan tell you will it tell you roughly when the foal if there is one is due?

No, because the external features of the foal are complete at that point. However, if you've been observant, the vet might be able to gather enough information to let you know when the foal might be due.

Do male horses look bad during breeding season?

Depends on the stallion. Some will run the fence, spend excessive time fussing over mares in his broodmare band and other behaviors that expend too much energy and result in weight loss...espeically if he fails to eat as well.

Other stallions will eat breakfast, mosey down to the breeding shed, only breed a mare who is solidly in heat (generally once or twice in a heat cycle) who look

great.

No matter how well a stallion is managed much of his body condition hinges on

his temperament.

Will a horse have milk if not pregnant?

Yes, a mare can lactate without being pregnant or nursing a foal, although this is rare. Usually a mare that is lactating without being pregnant or with a foal by her side, has a hormone imbalance that needs to be corrected.

What colour is urine when pregnant?

Urine color should be the same whether pregnant or not. Normal urine is a light amber color and clear. IF a newspaper article was in the toilet, you should be able to read the words if your urine is light amber.

Darker urine occurs first thing in the morning because it is concentrated from sitting in the bladder. It can also get dark anytime during the day or night if you are not drinking enough fluids.

Turbid or cloudy urine or with white casts in it is often a sign of urinary infection.

Blood should never be in the urine. It is also a sign of UTI or bladder infection.

A fatty sheen that floats on the top of the urine (or coats bowel movements) often means your gallbladder has a problem digesting fats.

And lastly, some foods and medicines can change the color of urine.

How much will a well bred Blanket Appaloosa cost?

It depends on sire & dam, if it gated, trained well, & just its over all heritage. Some times it does not matter of the color, its how well bred it is. A very well bred, trained horse can cost up to $15,000 dollars. I have just learned that Tortilas the horse from dressage in the FEI Wold Equestrian Games, Is appraised at $2,347,000. So it just matters what the heritage of the horse is & how well its trained. I have an Appaloosa that I got as a foal, that has a little Thoroughbred it him, I got him for $200. Again it just matters on the heritage & training. My foal had no training what so ever and a little bit of a mix in his breeding, so that is why I got him so cheap. I got my paint for $5,500. He is gated, purebred, & is trained in everything thinkable. You get it now....

23 year old Arabian horse Is she too old to get pregnant?

She may not be too old to be pregnant, but it is not safe to breed a 23 year old arabian. The foal and the mare may die during the pregnancy. If you are planning to do this, I want you to take my advice and do not try to do this if you want her to live much longer.

Which hormones help regulate a mare s pregnancy and foaling?

In the simplest format, the main hormones that maintain or end pregnancy are

Progesterone levels control pregnancy duration and are initially produced by the corpus luteum and by subsequent ovulations that produce secondary corpus lutea. Finally produced by the fetoplacental unit...progesterone decreases as

foal reaches maturity.

Prostiglandins can end early pregnancy (before day 35) by disrupting the corpus luteum. After day 35 with the formation of endometrial cups the mare will not return to heat even if the embryo dies in utero.

Oxytocin creates muscle relaxation and cervical dialation as well as milk production.

Depends on how old the female is. If she is younger still very fertile. Having children doesn't change how fertile you are, age does. 30+ are much less fertile than someone in their 20's.
