What are the oldest pair of hockey skates made of?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The oldest pair of (ice) skates known date back to about 3000 B.C., found at the bottom of a lake in Switzerland. The skates were made from the leg bones of large animals, holes were bored at each end of the bone and leather straps were used to tie the skates on. An old Dutch word for skate is "schenkel" which means "leg bone".

By the time a reasonable precursor of hockey came along (originally known as Ijscolf, or Colf on ice), the skates were handcrafted by blacksmiths from iron and/or steel. No two pair were alike as the craftsmen used patterns of their own design. Essentially, the skates consisted of blades of iron and/or steel embedded into blocks of wood which were in turn strapped to the skaters boots with either leather or rope fittings.

There is no such thing as an illegal curve in the nhl anymore. However you don't want to big of a curve because the bigger the curve the harder it is to backhand and the harder it is to stick handle on your backhand.

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Basically the same thing, but hockey pants have the pads inside of them when the girdle is skin tight and is just the pads. Girdles normally go under the long pants that some skaters wear when they play roller hockey. Overall pretty similar and both used to protect your high thigh area's.

Really, the best hockey stick depends on your own opinion, but my personal favorite is the Warrior Kronik. It is a very expensive (300-350$) hockey stick that has a nice look, good weight and great durability. If you have the money, this is the stick to go for.

How do you measure hockey goalie leg pads?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Generally, most goalie pads have their measurement on the side or tag of the pads. But, remember that most pads are measured differently from company to company. So there are a verity of ways to measure your pads, but what you can do (if your ordering by internet) is to measure from the ankle bone to the center of the knee cap, and send this to what ever company your ordering from. Most of the ones I've seen will check that you will fit the pads. Other than that, you will need to go to what ever company made the leg pads and see how they measure it.

How does the hockey stick curvature affect its accuracy?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The bigger the curve, the easier it is to raise the puck. With a smaller curve, you have to use more power to raise it (but not much more). With smaller curves, you have better puck control, and a better backhand. Usually center's have smaller curves because they have to use there backhand more, and wingers have bigger curves.

How long should a players stick be?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Someone wrote: 60" is the max. (Unless they updated it recently) Actually, the maximum stick length has been 63" since 1927 in direct response to Ernie "Moose" Johnson's 75-inch stick, which gave him a reach of 99 inches. Recently, due to a few very tall players, Zdeno Chára (6' 9") in particular, the NHL has waived that on a case-by-case basis. http://www.epinions.com/review/The_Official_Rules_of_Hockey_by_James_Duplacey/content_228523347588

In hockey can you put pant shells on regular hockey pants or do you have to have certain pants?

User Avatar

Asked by Cujack31

Shells are cosmetic covers for your existing hockey pants. They are typically used by teams that want to have a consistent look to their uniforms when player have a wide variety of styles and colors of their own pants. They have no padding of their own.

The shell is simply pulled on (or left on) over the top of your regular hockey pants. They will have a belt which can be cinched at the waist to keep the pants up. The shell will not cover the kidney protectors on the top of the pants that rise above the waist, but these are covered by the hockey sweater anyway.

its allows your stick to bend more when taking a slapshot thus creating a stronger spring motion which shoots it faster then a higher flex stick. better for defensmen is lower flex(not to low or you will brake it.

How frequently should you re-tape your hockey stick?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Depends on how much you use that stick. If you just play rec hockey once a week then you might get a few games or so with one tape job, depends on how much you shoot or stick handle the puck. But if it gets ripped or starts peeling then change it right away. Also change it if you notice on the bottom of the blade the tape getting worn away.

What is the biggest flex a hockey stick can have?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

about a 40 flex is maximum for a junior stick

----------------------------------------

The biggest flex a hockey stick can have, and I'm assuming you mean the largest number, is a 115 to 120 (depending on the manufacturer). A 120 flex is fairly difficult to find and most are only available in Europe. For the most part, the highest flex available in the USA is a 110.

In case there was any question, the higher the number in the flex rating, the stiffer the stick.

Here is a listing of average flex ratings for each size stick:

Youth - 35 to 40 flex

Junior - 50 flex

Intermediate - 60 to 70 flex

Senior - 75 to 110

If your left hand is the lower hand on an ice hockey stick is the stick considered to be left or right handed?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Our plant produces about 30% left to 70% right for forward sticks. However, almost all goalies play left, no matter which-handed they are.

Keep in mind that in forward positions right-handed people often play left, and vice versa, so the stick they use is not always an indication of which hand they write with. Only a very few goalies play right...probably fewer than 10% in professional hockey.

You are buying a hockey stick online It says that the curve is to the left Does this mean the stick is left or right-handed?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If I recall correctly the way the stick is defined left or right is variant upon which hand you use at the end of the stick. A left handed person would put their right hand on top and reverse for righty. There is no right way to wield a stick but its all about your personal comfort.
