Who were Niranam Poets or Kannassa Panicker?
The Niranam poets were three well-known poets who lived between AD 1350 and 1450. They were Madhava Panikkar, Sankara Panikkar and Rama Panikkar of the Kannassa family. The first two were uncles of Rama Panikkar. They were instrumental in the development of the modern Malayalam language. Their major literary contributions are Kannassa Ramayanam and Kannassa Bharatham. They are also known as Kannassan panicker or Kannassa poets.
Since Niranam was their native village, near Tiruvalla and Mannar, situated in the central Travancore region of Kerala, they were referred with that name as well.
Kannassa Panikken (Kannassa Panicker) refers to their caste name and common title. The name Kannisan is etymologically related to the truncated form of two words, Kani and Aasaan.
