The G doesn't represent anything, it's just a model designation like M, FX etc. The 35 represents 3.5L, the size of the engine. The new G37 coupe will have a 3.7L engine which is why the model number changed.

No need to remove the bumper... Just jack the front up and remove the front plastic fender liner. It's just 4 clips and 2 10mm bolts at the bottom. You will then have access to behind the headlight. You don't need to even remove the wheel, you should have enough room to work.
