In most ways, Intel was at one point superior to its competitors, but now with the cost of production as low as it is, AMD is able to create equal-quality processors for less cost. Some purists still stand by Intel, but for the most part, they are relying on their niche market processor sales. Mostly, there isn't too much variation in the way processors and other IC chips are made, it mostly depends on personal preference. If you plan on investing, I can't make too many claims, but as far as which manufacturer to chose when buying a processor or computer, there's no difference in quality between Intel and AMD. We are now in the neighborhood of three billion. The Power 7 and the Niagara have 2 billion and there are some with more. The amount changes from week to week so this answer is only good for a few days here in December six of 2011. LOL!

The best one being I7 if your into high graphical gaming and need a processor to keep up with it and other things like multitasking on large software's I7 has 4 cores so you can simply load your computer with a lot of programs running at the same time without any lag or crashes.

Get I5 if your into a small amount of gaming and do a lot of smaller tasks like word processing and the Internet.

Get I3 if you multitask with smaller software's this being again word processing and the Internet. You can game with an I3 but make sure you have the right hardware to run the game with this being the right RAM and Graphics card mainly, but try and get a laptop with a HDD with a fast transfer rate to load games at a faster speed. This applying with I7 and I5 but when you buy these processors the Laptop should come with high end Hardware.

A very smart man once told me that absolute performance doesn't matter, it's performance at a given price point that makes a product successful. While AMD hasn't held the absolute performance crown for several years now, that doesn't mean the company's products haven't been successful.
