Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering; (65) Indeed, it is evil as a settlement and residence." The term Muslim means?

Answer 1

Islam is a religion and those who follow this religion are called Muslims.

Answer 2

Islam is the name of the religion that Muslims follow.

I'm not an expert, but I think they follow teachings of the Qur'an (in terms, the Islamic bible). Muhammad was their last prophet (messenger from God). Islam and Christianity actually have many similarities when researching further.

This is very basic, and compares to Christianity as most people have basic knowledge of this faith (some ignorant people make assumptions and stereotype Islam).

Answer 3: In terms of what the words themselves mean.

In terms of lexicography.

Islam and Muslim are both part of the fourth verb paradigm (Af3al) of the root S-L-M where "Islam" is the Gerundial Noun (MaSdar) and Muslim is the Active Participle (Fa'3el). S-L-M has many meanings in its various verb paradigms of which the two most important are the first paradigm (Fa3ala) and the tenth paradigm (Istaf3ala), which are "Peace" and "Surrender" respectively.

The Peacemaker Definition

The relationship between the fourth and first paradigms is causative. This would mean that an action of the fourth causes the existence of the state or action of the first. A good English example would be that "dictate" is the causative of "write" because the act of dictating causes someone else to write.) Therefore, in this understanding, a "Muslim" is someone who causes peace to exist or a "Peacemaker" and "Islam" would be the act of doing this or "Peacemaking".

The Surrenderer Definition

The relationship between the fourth and tenth paradigm is the removal of reflexivity. This is a little more difficult of a theory to apply in this case since "surrender" is usually seen as a non-reflexive action already, but the theory goes thus. The tenth paradigm would be the reflexive of the fourth paradigm, for which an example would be that the verb in the fourth might be to wash a dog and the verb in the tenth might be to wash oneself. In this case, a Muslim is someone who is capitulating or surrendering to a higher state of being, i.e. a Surrenderer to God.Islam is therefore this act of Surrender.

Why is islam and judaism similar?

Brief answer is: Both the religions spring up from one source-Almighty God (Allah in Arabic). Though all the Prophets (May peace be upon them) preached one and the same religion- Islam-Submission to Almighty God, Judaism and Islam in the present shape was founded by Hazrat Abraham (AS).

It is better to say that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are similar. Here is a translation of a verse from the holy Qur'an, Chapter 3 - Al-i-Imraan, verse 84: Say (O Prophet Muhammad), "We believe in Allah, and in what has been revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and in (the Books) given to Moses, Jesus and the Prophets, by their Lord (Rab). We make no distinction between one and another among them, and to Allah do we bow our will (in Islam).

Ayat 85: If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (Submission to Allah), never will it be accepted of him; and in the hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost (All spiritual good)

The religion given by Almighty God is for the guidance of whole mankind It is not restricted for one nation, country or people. Unfortunately, the Jews restricted the religion to themselves. When they played false with their religion, Hazrat Jesus, Christ (May peace and blessings of Almighty God be upon him) came for their guidance. In stead of believing in him, helping him and following him, the Jews turned against him and plotted to crucify him.

What faith did Islamic leaders target for destruction as they moved east?

Muslim leaders didn't target any faith for destruction as they moved east.

Why are believes in Islam called Muslims?

Hey there. I guess I can answer ur question (I hope I'm not too late =D)

In English you have "Christ" + ian = "Christian" (= follower of the Christ) and "Christian" + ity = Christianity (= the religion of the Christ and Christians), right?

In Arabic it's a bit different.

First we had the verb "Aslam" which literally means "peacefully submitted" (i.e. to submit oneself peacefully to God).

Then turning it into a noun, we convert the "A" into an "I" so we get "Islam", i.e. the religion of submission to God.

To indicate the doer of an action, we don't usually add "-ian" or "-er" but rather use an "M" + a "u" instead of the first vowel in the verb, then an "i" sound before the last letter, and thus we have "Muslim"

Than all of this was, as u can see, borrowed from Arabic into English.

I hope u find this helpful.

The Historic 'Pact of Omar'

(Dhimmitude: mandatory discrimination under normative Islamic rule)

We heard from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ghanam [died 78/697] as follows: When Umar ibn al-Khattab, may God be pleased with him, accorded a peace to the Christians of Syria, we wrote to him as follows:

In the name of God, the Merciful and Compassionate. This is a letter to the servant of God Umar [ibn al-Khattab], Commander of the Faithful, from the Christians of such-and-such a city. When you came against us, we asked you for safe-conduct (aman) for ourselves, our descendants, our property, and the people of our community, and we undertook the following obligations toward you:

  1. We shall not build, in our cities or in their neighborhood, new monasteries, Churches, convents, or monks' cells, nor shall we repair, by day or by night, such of them as fall in ruins or are situated in the quarters of the Muslims.
  2. We shall keep our gates wide open for passersby and travelers. We shall give board and lodging to all Muslims who pass our way for three days.
  3. We shall not give shelter in our churches or in our dwellings to any spy, nor bide him from the Muslims.
  4. We shall not teach the Qur'an to our children.
  5. We shall not manifest our religion publicly nor convert anyone to it. We shall not prevent any of our kin from entering Islam if they wish it.
  6. We shall show respect toward the Muslims, and we shall rise from our seats when they wish to sit.
  7. We shall not seek to resemble the Muslims by imitating any of their garments, the qalansuwa, the turban, footwear, or the parting of the hair. We shall not speak as they do, nor shall we adopt their kunyas.
  8. We shall not mount on saddles, nor shall we gird swords nor bear any kind of arms nor carry them on our- persons.
  9. We shall not engrave Arabic inscriptions on our seals.
  10. We shall not sell fermented drinks.
  11. We shall clip the fronts of our heads.
  12. We shall always dress in the same way wherever we may be, and we shall bind the zunar round our waists
  13. We shall not display our crosses or our books in the roads or markets of the Muslims. We shall use only clappers in our churches very softly. We shall not raise our voices when following our dead. We shall not show lights on any of the roads of the Muslims or in their markets. We shall not bury our dead near the Muslims.
  14. We shall not take slaves who have been allotted to Muslims.
  15. We shall not build houses overtopping the houses of the Muslims.

(When I brought the letter to Umar, may God be pleased with him, he added, "We shall not strike a Muslim.")

We accept these conditions

for ourselves and for the people of our community, and in return we receive safe-conduct.

If we in any way violate these undertakings for which we ourselves stand surety, we forfeit our covenant [dhimma], and we become liable to the penalties for contumacy and sedition.

Umar ibn al-Khittab replied: Sign what they ask, but add two clauses and impose them in addition to those which they have undertaken. They are: "They shall not buy anyone made prisoner by the Muslims," and "Whoever strikes a Muslim with deliberate intent shall forfeit the protection of this pact."

(from Al-Turtushi, Siraj al-Muluk, pp. 229-230)

How and why did Islamic civilization spread?

Answer 1

geography and well manners . !!! Islam was born in Mecca, in what is known as Saudi , in modern times. in the center of what is know as the old world , Asia , Africa and Europe. the prophet of Islam was charismatic very agreeable and lovable person . he lead by example , he was patient understanding and very open minded , that people from all walks of life can relate to him . he preaches what all other biblical prophets preached , without ever trying to claim authority or financial gain he didnt have any special powers like previous , prophets . e.g. walking on water , turning water into wine , or building arch or turning stick into snake , none of that , he spoke to their brains and souls , provided answers for long lingering questions and solutions to time old problems . he brought structure and system to their lives. but above all he fought injustices of all kinds and shapes. he promoted equality , ur color ur age ur sex or ur family and ancestors were no longer advantage or disadvantage . people for first time were told that they owned how to compose themselves and took control of their fate under one god . Arab at the time were merchants and controlled all the roads between the different kingdoms in Asia and Africa . travelling back and forth in importing and exporting meeting with new people , their well manners and distinguished cultural aspects of their civilized made them admired , loved and mimicked and then more people started converting . there is a theory suggested that it was wars. that Muslims forced Islam on other nations in the new territories they captured and ruled . decades later they were defeated and had to leave them countries, but people remained Muslims since. if they were forced or treated unjustly , converting back to their original religions would v been the expected outcome, another fact discredited that theory is , Jewish minorities and christian minorities still exist in all muslim dominated countries to this day. if they forced . people to convert to islam , why didn not they force everyone ??

Answer 2

Islam is a heavenly religion, a continuation of Judaism and Christianity. Its message is universal and simple to follow. It believes in universal human brotherhood. For these reasons Muslim civilization is still spreading through out the world.
