Sherlock Holmes was introduced in A Study in Scarlet (1887), followed by The Sign of Four in 1890, but didn't really take hold of the public's imagination until Strand magazine, newly founded in 1891, published a series of short stories called "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes." From that point on the public couldn't get enough of Holmes and his always reliable confidant, John H. Watson, a retired military doctor. During the 71 days in 1888 that Jack the Ripper killed 5 prostitutes in Whitechapel, the police did not have the detective skills that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about in his Sherlock Holmes stories. This made Sherlock Holmes the hero in those days.

How did the lack of sanitation and sewerage help Jack The Ripper?
'Help' is probably not the appropriate word. It's true that the living conditions in the east end put the poorest of the poor at a disadvantage. The majority of the Ripper's victims were in fact homeless, relying on doss houses as a place to lay their heads. When money for a bed did not materialize, these women were forced to find a doorway or park bench, and with any luck they could catch a little sleep before police shooed them away.
The Ripper was aided though, by the lack of adequate lighting. It was the age of the gaslight, but they were few and far between in Whitechapel and Spitalfields. There were many small streets and alleys that had no lighting at all, coupled with London's famous fog and visablity was diminished greatly.

Is there any connection between Jack the Ripper in England and the murders in New York?
The inclusion of New York prostitute Carrie Brown as a Ripper victim is somewhat recent. Although the murders had similarities the only connection seems to be to suspect George Chapman, who at the time of the Brown murder was alleged to live in New Jersey.
Unfortunately, there is no proof that Chapman was in the United States, and there is some proof that he was not. Chapman, skilled with a pair of scissors, was employed as a hairdresser/ladies man. It was no secret Chapman had a roving eye and a seriously nasty temper. But when Chapman decided to make murder his advocation, it was poison he chose as a weapon.
Since Brown was included on the Ripper suspect list because of a possible link to Chapman, it is a tenuous thread that binds these two.
How would it be easier for Jack The Ripper to kill women if they were alcoholics?
In several respects, the alcohol consumption of his victims aided the Ripper's cause. Alcohol is a depressant, it lowers inhabitions, distorts perception, and depending on the amount, effects coordination and slows reactions. JTR's victims were street-wise and no doubt, cynical. The ability to judge a person's character was for them, stock and trade. After a few drinks, their ability to descern a dangerous individual may not have been as sharp. Impaired motor function and reaction time would make the victims much easier to overcome, especially if they had drank enough alcohol to make them unsteady on their feet. If eyewitness accounts are correct, most, if not all of the victims were in various stages of intoxication. One of the victims, just hours prior to her murder, was arrested for being drunk in public. It is anybody's guess whether their fates would have been any different had they been sober, but without a doubt, their drunken state did make them easier targets for the likes of Jack The Ripper.

Why do you think that the Dear boss letter was sent to the central news agency and not the police?
Of the hundreds of letters and notes that were written in 1888 and beyond, not all were sent to Scotland Yard. They did have their share of course, but the London's many newspapers received their share of the 'fun'. The Ripper obviously craved causing a stir. It made him feel superior to the rest of humanity.
This is very common among some serial killers. Along with collecting trophies and revisiting the crime scenes or body dump sights, bragging in the press or to police gives the killer an extra charge until the next kill.
Dennis Radar, the BTK killer from Kansas, was famous for this and is in fact the very thing that finally got him arrested. He couldn't resist the urge to brag.

Where was Portrait of a Killer Jack the Ripper Case Closed published?
It's written by Patricia Cornwell. I don't know where it was first published, but according to my reading of it the case is very unclosed.
Patricia Cornwell's bestseller was published in 2002 in hardcover first. Although there will always be controversy with a case such as JTR, Cornwell's enormous amount of circumstantial evidence is overwhelming. Scott Peterson was convicted on much less evidence than Miss Cornwell presented.
