Why would a Jain sweep a footpath as he or she walks along?
1st of all Jains don't sweep footpaths.
The monks believing in Ahimsa want to make sure that they don't hurt tiny organisms which may come in their path. So they clear/sweep the path before walking. So it is clearing before walking rather than sweeping the footpath. They do this to avoid th accidental killing of an living creature, because it is one of their five commandments. They also will wear cloth over their mouths to avoid accidetally breathing in something living.
