Senator Joseph McCarthy (a Republican from ) is best known for his role in the "Red Scare" of the 1950s, so much so that a new term for a "witch hunt" of suspected enemies with little or no proof emerged: "McCarthyism".
Following World War 2, it quickly became clear that wartime ally the Soviet Union would become a rival for global power with the United States. This, combined with the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War in 1949, led to an epidemic of paranoia over the "Red Menace", which McCarthy capitalized on by accusing members of the US State Department of being communist sympathizers. He was fond of claiming he had "a list of names" of known communists in the government. McCarthy even went so far as to accuse high-ranking members of the military of communist leanings; it was his attacks on the military that seem to have finally turned people against McCarthy, as even President Eisenhower (also a Republican), finally denounced the wayward Senator, after having remained silent on the issue of McCarthyism.

Reagan may have tried to help some actors that McCarthy's committee caused to be blacklisted. Surely he knew some of these people and had likely worked with them.
Bonzo Reagan did nothing to help those people that had been slandered, defiled and brow-beat by McCarthy and his brutal browbeating methods. McCarthy seized upon the idea of painting himself as a rapacious anti-communist Senator when he realized that due to his high number of missed committee meeting, missed votes (highest no-vote record in the Senate at the time), that his re-election was in serious jeopardy - he need to create a new facade, a he had watched the media covering the House Un-American activities hearings, so he began his own grand-stand in the Senate.
McCarthy engaged in a grand-standing outrageous charade designed to get him maximum press coverage and notoriety. He made claims of having pages of documented communist conspirators that had infiltrated the state department and the upper echelons of the military. These papers never existed, he made it up. He conducted a witch hunt that left thousands of people's careers destroyed and resulting in over 100 suicides, and not one truly subversive who had succeeded in getting into an even moderate level of the government.
To quote Senators Carl Levin and Susan Collins:
"Senator McCarthy's zeal to uncover subversion and espionage led to disturbing excesses. His browbeating tactics destroyed careers of people who were not involved in the infiltration of our government. His freewheeling style caused both the Senate and the Subcommittee to revise the rules governing future investigations, and prompted the courts to act to protect the Constitutional rights of witnesses at Congressional hearings... These hearings are a part of our national past that we can neither afford to forget nor permit to reoccur."
McCarthy claimed that there were known communists in the State Department. He held investigations and hearings and which ruined many careers. He never actually presented any facts to back up his claims that people were communists or "fellow travelers" or traitors to the nation. Presidents Truman and Eisenhower so feared his influence with the public that they did nothing to stop him. When McCarthy attacked the US Army as a hotbed of communist activity, the Senate finally censored him and he died a broken politician.

As far as we have researched we have found out that the McCArthy trails were about finding ommmunists in America after the 2nd world wr as the government were worried about being overthrown. McCarthy was unfair in the way he trailed suspects, he gave them two choises, either admit to communism and go to jail or lose all your rights and belongings, or tell them of people you know who are communists. Obviously this did not really work as people lied to get out of jail. But yeah, as far as i know that's what it is. :)
