Kyoto Protocol

It is quite a complex international agreement.

The basic tenets are the country promises to reduce their pollution emmisions by a given amount over a given time period.

However there is no way or regulations to enforce anyone to do so.

China and other developing nations get a pass on reducing their CO2 emissions. Kyoto limits are only goals for each country and those countries who agreed to limit their CO2 output in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol can purchase the rest of their CO2 generation needs from each other.

The participants in the Kyoto meetings recognised that developing countries would not be able to move out of poverty and develop strong economies if they could never increase their CO2 emissions. China is now the world's largest emitter of carbon dioxide in aggregate, but its per head emissions are still low. Along with other developing countries, China is permitted to increase its carbon dioxide emissions.

Canada signed and ratified the Kyoto Protocol, committing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6% below 1990 levels. However, Canada ultimately withdrew from the agreement in 2011 after failing to meet its emission reduction targets. This decision was largely due to the government's shift in priorities and concerns about economic impacts.

South Africa is a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol, which sets binding emission reduction targets for developed countries. South Africa has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions below business-as-usual levels, but as a developing country, it does not have binding targets like developed countries. South Africa has also been involved in negotiations to shape future international climate agreements post-Kyoto.

The Maldives, as a low-lying island nation highly vulnerable to climate change and rising sea levels, played an active role in pushing for ambitious emissions reductions and action on climate change in the negotiations leading to the Kyoto Protocol. The Maldives highlighted its vulnerability to climate impacts to garner support for stronger climate action among other countries.

It has been successful in many ways, firstly it has made major corperations realise the signifecence of their innapropriate actions. :)

The US signed the Kyoto Protocol on 12 November 1998. It has not yet ratified it.

Every country in the world signed and ratified the treaty except the United States which has signed, but not ratified the treaty. Canada has recently withdrawn from the treaty!

The Kyoto protocol was signed by Clinton, but neither the Clinton government or the following Bush government ever ratified it. It has also never been unsigned by the Bush governement. Congress could also move forward with ratification without presidential approval, but it could be vetoed by the Whitehouse if approved. Most analysts believe congress would be unable to pass ratification, as many Democrates also reject the treaty. Brandon Caswell

The United States is not involved in the Kyoto Protocol. They signed the agreement in 1998 but later withdrew in 2001 without ratifying it. Despite this, many other countries continue to be part of the Kyoto Protocol.

Australia did in fact sign the Kyoto accord, but the Liberal government delayed ratifying the protocol although Australia had negotiated extremely favourable terms under the agreement. It was ratified in December 2007 by the new Labor Government under Kevin Rudd.
