The Knights of Labor was organized and grew to more than 700,000 members. After some of its members were accused of using violence, the Knights lost members and influence in 1890s. The American Federation of Labor (AFL) pushed for higher wages, better working conditions, and the right to bargain collectively. Many workers used strikes to achieve their goals. They refused to do their jobs until their employers agreed to certain demands.

Lincoln believed that the Border States were an important key to winning the Civil War. They were the states that had strong loyalties to either cause. Maryland was important because of its strategic location to DC. Delaware bordered Maryland and shared the peninsula with it and Virginia. The government forces sided with the Capitalists back then for the same reason they do now. The business interests pay off the corrupt members of Congress to pass anything they want in regards to labor laws, health care, student loans, etc.

Persons that perform work (labor). They are the workers of a company. I the Construction field, it may refer to those persons that perform non-specialized work, such as carrying materials, cleanup of scrap, assembling scaffolding, etc.

Employers are less likely to approve coalition bargaining because it tends to equalized the affected unions' benefits - hence bargaining strength. For example, a union which historically has not negotiated top-notched wages and benefits for particular class of employees will now be aligned with a union which has historically done so for the same class of employees. The net result would be higher operating expenses for the employers who most assuredly would have to equalized the wages and benefits as a starting point to negotiations. By contrast, unions would more likely approve of multiemployer bargaining because the unions (which have finite resources) would expend less time and money because of the lack of overall time spent at the bargaining table. The unions would therefore be free to use the resulting time and cost savings for other union purposes, such as pending arbitrations and mediations. The most recent trends have been away from unions in the U.S. Unionization is still fairly strong in the public sector for government workers, health care workers, and teachers, but in other areas union membership has dropped.

It is incorrect to state that the Knights of Labor were a failure or to suggest that the American Federation of Labor was only modestly successful.
