How did the Knights of Labor differ from other labor organizations?

In 1869, a group of tailors, led by Uriah P. Stephens, formed the Noble and Holy Order of the Knights of Labor. They spread their message in secret, organizing workers of different jobs but not getting political. They realized that labor organizers and labor members would be fired by employers, so the Knights remained a secret organization as long as it could. The Knights differed from the National Labor Union in that they accepted Blacks and women and unskilled workers. In 1879, Stephens was replaced by Terence V. Powderly, and the Knights became a labor powerhouse. The Knights continued to grow until the infamous Haymarket Square tragedy was unfairly blamed on the Knights, by business owners and officials.

What is the reason for shrinking Labor Unions in the US?

I thing the reason that U.S. Labor Unions are shrinking is two fold. First, people don't recognize the importance of Labor Unions and secondly, Big Business does not want to negotiate with Labor Unions regarding contracts and working conditions and other issues important to workers. I am a Union member and have taken classes in Labor Studies and understand the struggles that Unions (and members) went thru to achieve the 40 hours work week, job security, job safety (worker safety), equality on the job etc. The American public has heard the horror stories of Wal-Mart and still continues to shop there. Look around American jobs are being sent overseas. There are very few things that America manufactures here in America that people in the states and other countries are buying. Our money is leaving the United States and is going to so many other countries and staying there. With Labor Unions you have better paying jobs which in turn meant the American consumer could spend more here in the states. The rise of Labor Unions also saw the growth of the American middle class. As Union density shrinks so does the American middle class. We will soon be a country of the rich and the poor and no middle class.

What happens when workers join labor unions?

Who was the founder of the first labor union?

The first American labor unions dated from before 1800. The first was founded in 1794 in Philadelphia, and called the Federal Society of Journeymen Cordwainers (shoemakers). Workmen's Associations became the backbone of Andrew Jackson's supporters. By the end of the Civil War, there were lots of "unions" but they were local and had little contact with each other. In 1866 that changed when William Sylvis organized the National Labor Union and worked to organize workers in many different states and of different occupations. Sylvis believed that labor needed to become political to gain worker's rights, better wages, and safe working conditions. In 1869, a group of tailors, led by Uriah P. Stephens, formed the Noble and Holy Order of the Knights of Labor.
