i have a 1986 Toyota 4x4 auto 2h diesel with electric and hand crank if battery is flat it has a special radiotr with hole in it for crank handel

A conventional diesel engine will smoke excessively under load in situations whereby the engine rpm are too low for the throttle position ie, your throttle is opened too far and the revs are too low for the load the engine is expected to move- This is sometimes called "overfuelling". It basically means there is too much diesel being injected in relation to too little air being induced into the engine, in the same way that when you pour too much charcoal onto your barbeque fire it smokes because you are smothering it and there is not enough air. The amount of air that is induced into your engine is proportional to the engine rpm on most diesels like old landrovers, so don't change gear too early, or lug your engine. You will notice if you look in your side rearview mirror that when you go up a steep hill it may smoke excessively if you step on the gas pedal too much, but you will also notice that beyond a point you will get no corresponding increase in power, in other words you are just pouring fuel into the engine which is not even being burnt properly, and you are just wasting fuel and carboning up your engine. Some modern diesels overcome this problem by electronics. The gas pedal position is measured in conjunction with the air intake pressure and engine rpm and if you floor the pedal with the revs being too low, the computer will to some extent override your decision to prevent wasteful and incomplete burning of fuel.- This "drive by wire" system has its dissadvantages, imagine if a rat eats your wiring loom or there is a bad connection, you could have no throttle. the conventional system is better if you monitor the amount of overfuelling as you drive and tap off a bit when the smoke gets excessive.

Depends if you there are people in it or not, and whether you drowned it in salt or fresh water. Seriously - that depends 100% on what motor you're talking about. Should be something between 10 and 30 litres of fluid. Remember 3:1 water/antifreeze in summer, and 1:1 if you get ice overnight.

Yes it is an advanced engine running at fairly high rpm, use 91 or 92. I have the 2.5 L V6 and use ultra 94 octane. it's better gas than standard. Experiment with a few tanks of high octane and see how it runs. if it makes no difference then use 91 minimum. enjoy your FreeLoader

This is the procedure from the LR manual, I figure they spent some time getting it right.

1. Remove bleed screw from heater return hose.

2. Slowly fill the system through the coolant expansion tank until a steady flow of coolant is emitted from the bleed hole.

3. Fit and close bleed screw in heater return hose.

4. Continue to fill system through the expansion tank until coolant reaches to the base of the expansion tank bleed hose.

5. Fit expansion tank filler cap.

6. Start and run engine at idle speed for 5 minutes.

CAUTION: DO NOT operate air conditioning

7. Switch off engine.

8. Squeeze bottom hose several times to remove any trapped air.

9. Start engine and run at speeds varying between idle speed and 3500 rev/min for 7 minutes.

10. Switch off engine and allow to cool.

11. Remove expansion tank filler cap and add coolant until it reaches the 'MAX' mark on the expansion tank.

12. Fit expansion tank filler cap.

13. Start and run engine until normal operating temperature is reached.

CAUTION: The bottom hose must be warm/hot, this will ensure the thermostat is fully open.

14. Ensure warm air is available at vents.

NOTE: If warm air is not available, an air-lock may be present in heater matrix. If necessary, allow engine to cool, remove expansion tank filler cap and repeat bleed operation at heater hose

15. Switch off engine and allow to cool.

16. Check for leaks and top-up coolant to 'MAX' mark on expansion tank

17. Fit underbelly panel.

18. Fit engine acoustic cover.

Price of Land Rover Range Rover 2003 is approx $9,000.

There may be an open bonnet. The bonnet may not have been closed properly, as can happen.
