It depends on the species. Lizards use their tongue for smelling to aid it in finding food. When a lizard flicks its tongue, it is picking up odors. This could be one of many reasons, the most frequent culprit would be other fish, for instance gourami and betta come from the same family of fish, more often than not they don't get on also there are other species of fish such as rosy and tiger barbs that are very "nippy" and like to go around the tank nibbling at long flowing fins, i would need more info to properly diagnose but that is my first thought.

If you have a spare small tank i would suggest taking you little fighter out and putting him on his own, they live mainly in mangroves so you could make the spare/new tank/bowl to look like this, if you do then add some melafix to the tank, melafix will encourage the regrowth of fins.

Additional Info: After doing research on this species, I still haven't found the date it was added to the Endangered Species List. I did discover that as far back as 1915, The Dutch Colonial Government instituted a set of protection plans for the dragon. I'll continue to look for the date and which list the Komodo Dragon is listed. Also the statement above is correct, even today the villagers still will poison carrion bait to reduce the population, much as ranchers of the American West do to rid the area of coyotes, wolves, or mountain lions. well frankly the only option for keeping a reptile is a bearded dragon originally from austrailia, these curious creatures love to be handled and can be fed dry food in pellet form, they are easy to look after and make great pets. they dont bite and when they are cross they puff up a beard, hence the name, but ask anyone they really are amazing and are easy to look after, love being handled and make a great pet. so i suggest a bearded dragon for a pet.
