Multiple events contributed by LBJ escalated the Vietnam War. The first was National Security Memorandum #273 of 11/26/63, which authorized covert operations against North Vietnam, which completely reversed Kennedy's Vietnam policy in National Security Memorandum #263. On August 7, 1964, the Tonkin Gulf Resolution is adopted after the U.S-staged incident in the Gulf of Tonkin, which attempted to blame the North Vietnamese for an attack on a U.S. destroyer. The resolution gave the president broad war powers to allow him to implement military action to prevent hostile action against U.S. forces. In early February of 1965, the U.S. begins Operation Rolling Thunder, a massive bombing campaign against North Vietnam and the Vietcong. Finally, the clinching and sticking commitment decision came on June 8, 1965, when Johnson committed to send U.S. ground forces to South Vietnam.

After Kennedy was killed, Johnson took over as president and escalated from 16,000 troops to 550,000 troops.

Though the war was winnable at smaller levels than that, he didn't win it.

Pressure from the media and the American Public about his handling of the war made him decide not to run for re-election.

There were no clear strategic goals and objectives for the war, and we were not using the right tactical approach in response to the skills of the north. Casualties were mounting, and the north probably knew that this would ultimately hasten the end of the war by eroding the support of the US people. Seriously adding to the erosion of support there was regular coverage of the war on television through the brave efforts of reporters who accompanied troups right to the front lines. Nightly, we witnessed the carnage that was taking place there.

I am not quite sure what you want to know. "Great Society" was a term used by President Lyndon Johnson to decribe a legislative agenda intended to end poverty and racial discrimination in the US. Ending poverty included more job training, better education at all levels, new jobs, low-cost health insurance and better housing. The idea was to end the circumstances that trapped certain groups of people into poverty from birth. The need for such a program was the factor that led to its creation. It got through Congress because Johnson had won a land-slide victory in 1964.

Johnson picked up his dog by the ears, which looks like it could be painful to the dog. It looked a bit like animal cruelty, and in any event, did not seem like the kind of thing a politician should do in order to present a good public image.
