Did Cleopatra breed the first Maltese dog?
No, probably not Cleopatra.
It has been estimated that The Maltese breed originated around 6,000 B.C., or 8,000 years ago. Although the ancient Greeks and Romans believed the dog originated on the Island of Malta--they called the breed the Melitaie Dog, Melitaie being the ancient name for Malta--there is really no evidence that proves the dog was indigenous to the Island, but rather that the Maltese is descended from a Spitz-type dog bred by the peoples of the area which is now south central Europe. The breed was eventually distributed as an exotic article of trade from the ancient island trading center of Malta, hence the name, and from there migrated by caravans to the farthest reaches of the civilized world.
Do most Maltese dogs need cages?
if you train your dog as a pup in a cage it most likely wont need one when it grows up, but training a Maltese in a cage isn't so easy. Mine barked all night until I took her out, so now she sleeps with me in my bed. She likes her cage, just not when she is locked in it. Whenever I'm gone, she sleeps in her cage (out of will). If you are talking about locking your dog in a cage while your gone, I do not think that is necessary, since Maltese don't usually posses a destructive nature, but it depends on the individual dog.--as a puppy you may consider putting them in a pin (like a play pin) and placing their cage, water, food and a wee pad inside their pin if you are worried about your house. This way they aren't locked inside a cage, have access to food and water, and can also go to the bathroom if they have to.
I want a Maltese puppy but there is nobody at my house for when i go to school so what should i do?
Don't get a puppy, then. Puppies need 24 hour care for at least the first three months. There are plenty of adult Maltese dogs that are sweet and already potty trained. Try looking for a Maltese rescue in your area.
You should take your dog to the vet, unless it's a teeny tiny piece, but if your dog starts acting strange, you should still take him/her to the vet.
What are some negative characteristics of a Maltese?
I wouldn't trade mind for the world, but he's 6 months old and here are some issues we're working on. These are common for this breed, which is why it's important to properly train them the moment you get them instead of letting them run all over you like I did.
1. Potty-Training - This is one of the most challenging breeds to train.
2. Separation Anxiety - They can become very dependent on one person. He flips out whenever I leave without him.
3. Finicky Eating - Never, ever let them have even a scrap of people food or the battle is lost.
4. Fragility - He's small so he has to have little stairs to get up on the couch or bed. I worry he may injure himself if he ever tries to jump down instead.
5. Yapping - He barks A LOT. He can hear the neighbor's dog next door who's a barker and they go back and forth.
However it's worth noting that with enough time and dedication, these type of problems can be resolved and even prevented if the new owner is ready for them. There are several wonderful resources out there on how to properly care for and train these little cuties. All of the above issues are my fault, not his. I spoiled him too much at first, and let him have his way all the time. Now I have to work twice as hard to train him properly. Had I done things correctly from the beginning, we'd be a lot better off by now.
