It is a tricky move I'll admit. You have to bend your arms and put your palms on the ground above your head, bend your knees and bring them to your chest. Then thrust your legs up and out while pushing off with your hands. Arch your back as you launch and snap upright when your feet hit the ground. The trick is using enough force with both arms and legs together. Practice makes perfect!

Were did a martial arts bo come from?

The person that first picked up a stick. As people learned to use it, they passed the skills on to their family. With regards to Japanese martial arts, the use of the bo as a weapon became popularized roughly during the 1600's while Japan was occupying the Ryu-ku Islands (Okinawa is on these islands, and at the time and for many centuries were not considered part of Japan). During this time it was against the law for the inhabitants of the islands to have a sword, the weapon of choice of the time. However, the locals still found it necessary to defend themselves against bandits who did have swords, so the bo was used because it was widely available. At the time rice flails were used as well (nuchaku) as were the handles to mill wheels (tonfa). I don't think any one person can be accredited with inventing the bo; however, there are some people who have become very proficient with the bo. The long pole was a common tool used by farmers throughout South East Asia for carrying heavy loads balanced across their shoulders and for planting rice plants in the rice paddies. As anyone that becomes proficient with their tools knows, they become comfortable with them and can use them with great experience and ability. It becomes an extension of the body.

What is Steven Seagals background?

No; Jewish father, "gentile" mother, making him "half Jewish." If Steven Seagal looks Italian, there is a historical explanation for that; In the 100's B.C., large numbers of Jews settled in Rome. Because travel was an even more expensive affair back then than it is now, we know with certainty, that the Jews who traveled to Rome came from the tribe of Levi, the wealthiest in all of ancient Israel due to temple revenue from the leaders of that tribe, the Cohanim (the priests). By the time Rome invaded Israel, which they renamed Judaea ("land of the Jews"), and later Palestine ("land of the Philistines"), the city of Rome had a community of 20,000 Jews. Not much by today's standards but in ancient times that number is huge. Recently in Italy, they have discovered vast numbers of catacombs with Jewish menoras on top of them, some going back over 2,000 years. You should watch "The Naked Archaeologist" on History International with Zimcha Yacabovich, its an interesting show! Anyway, Zimcha's show, demonstrated damning evidence, that the ancestors of ashkenazi Jewry, are indeed Levites. The show also talked about how many of the households had large "temple caliber" menoras. While any Jew can own a menora, only a priest, is allowed to own one made for a synagogue. In modern times, only a Rabbi. I'm not making this up; those are the rules. The sheer number of menoras possesed by that community, not to mention the fact that to bury someone in a catacomb was an extremely expensive affair, in addition, the prevalence of the Cohanim gene in the Italian population, all point to the fact, that the ashkenazi are Levites. Jacob, by the way, did not have too high an opinion of his son Levi. Alright, what this has to do with Steven Seagal; in Roman culture, actually, cultures the world over outside Anglo-Germanic, there is the concept of "you need a woman." Intimacy with a woman, in cultures outside Anglo-Germanic ones, is seen as a need no different from food, drink, and going to the bathroom. See only American culture has the notion of the "pervert" regarding an unmarried man who thinks about naked women. What this has to do with Steven Seagal; part of the reason many Italians are dark, is two fold. One, like I said, because intimacy is seen as a "need," there have always been women willing to, ah, barter their "services" to "help" men fulfill that need, e.g. prostitution. Not all hookers in ancient times were heartless; although babies that resulting from such unions were usually dumped in specialized "baby dumpsters," most of the time, prostitutes would give up their children to barren women, or, men looking for laborers. A given child could very well grow up in a brothel until the age of 6, and then sold as a slave. The reason many Italians "look Jewish," is because no doubt many Levite men, visited brothels. The second reason, has to do with the slaves the Romans brought from Judaea; all total, Rome did indeed take roughly 100,000 Jews, but see, it was not done all at once, it was over a period of 100 years. Not only that, for every Jew they took, 10 more were made in Judaea. Something modern readers of history seem to forget, is that the ancient Hebrews allowed polygamy, moreover, the land of Israel was in fact more fertile and productive food wise back then, than it is now, ironically enough, because the whole of the mediterranean coasts was not as dry, rocky and barren as it is today. Yes, the Romans did indeed take a substantial number of Jews, however they did not do it all at once. Nor did they "wipe the land clean" of Jews and "take everyone" during the "diaspora." Even after the revolt of 70 A.D., the majority of people in "Palestina" were Jews. You want to know what happened to them? General Khalid slaughtered them; the Hebrew population of what the Arabs call Palestine, was killed off by Khalid. All males over 13 were massacred, women of course sold into bondage, and male babies and kids, taken to be raised as slaves, the ones who were particularly strong or spirited, or demonstrated a knack for fighting, were taken away to Egypt where, along with many Africans, were trained to be soldier slaves. Something Muslims won't tell you, is that many Mamelukes were of Hebrew ancestry. The majority were in fact black people, mostly taken from the Sudan. Spain in fact, was conquered by black dudes and berbers, it was not conquered by Arabs. Moving on with this very crucial history lesson; I need you to use your logic. You have a given Roman woman. Rome, does not allow castration, not even of slaves. There are untold thousands of Jewish slaves throughout the Italian peninsula. A given Roman woman's husband, is away fighting. The only male available to her, is a 15 year old Jewish slave. What do you think will happen? By the by, those birth control herbs the Romans used are extinct now; the Romans, used a plant that was native to Italy, that if you mixed it with water and drank it as a tea, it worked as birth control. It worked so well, the plant became extinct. Now, her husband away, that plant extinct, and a 15 year old Jewish boy that she OWNS, legally, and literally OWNS, he's her property, what do you suppose will happen? Now, you add up the numbers, and, of course many Italians are dark and "look Jewish." Its more the Jew in them, than the Arab in them, that makes most Italians dark, or, rather, many dark Italians dark. The majority of Italians do not have Jewish ancestry mind, most are European, but, every once in a while, a person from Israel visiting Italy, or even a person from New York or Los Angeles, will run into an Italian who looks like a cousin, uncle, or parent. Yes, its true, Roman soldiers raped Hebrew women but, Hebrew slaves got payback by giving their wives bellyfulls! and that is why, my friend, Steven Seagal "looks Italian." Yeah, some Italians do have Arab in them, but, the semitic group that made by far the largest genetic footprint in Italy, were the Jews, specifically, the Levites, and to a certain extent many from the tribe of Judah, who formed the majority of the zealots. A given "dark Italian" may descend from an Arab, a Levite Jew, or a tribe of Judah Jew, because people choose mates based on genetic inheritance, that is, we are attracted to people that our parents are attracted to, its impossible to tell exactly WHO a given dark Italian descends from. That is why most Italians simply refer to themselves as "Italian" and nothing else. FYI, while watching the Italian channel on Dish Network the other night, I saw an Italian actress who looked just like Sarah Michelle Gellar. Likewise I've seen Italians who looke like Iraqi Jews; myself personally I'm an Iraqi Jew but I get confused for an Italian all the time. [[User:67.148.120.72|67.148.120.72]]stardingo747

Do martial arts really work?

Yes, the practice of martial arts will lead to some muscle development. I have practiced wrestling for ten years, Brazilian Ju-Jitsu for a year and a half, and Kodakan Judo for about six months.
The physical workout and conditioning from practicing martial arts will make your body build some muscle while burning fat and speeding up your metabolism. If you are interested in major muscle development I would recommend that you start a steady weight lifting program and watch what you eat, in my opinion there is nothing worse than doing a hard work out and then gaining undesirable weight through a poor diet.
Right now I practice Judo twice a week, Brazilian Ju Jitsu 1-2 times a week and a kickboxing weightlifting program twice a week (developed by one of my friends who practices kickboxing). Martial arts will help however it will never yield the same muscle development as weight training.

What is the most popular style of Kung Fu?

Its hard to answer this concretely without statistics, but I would venture Tai Chi and Wing Chun are among the most popular today. The former is now being promoted by health organizations because its movements do not put stress on the joints like traditional exercises. This makes it ideal for older people to practice. The latter was made popular by Ip Man via Bruce Lee and Donnie Yen in various films and in dojos around the world.
