In the story 'The Little Mermaid' the mermaid rescued a drowning prince, brought him safely to shore, and stayed vigilantly by until somebody found him. And then their are reports of mermaid (sirens) purposely luring sailing ships onto reefs so that they (the mermaids) may feed on the drowned sailors.

Now in all fairness the latter accounts here were originally attributed to the sirens who are not the same as mermaids but the two have become united and for reasons that we cannot legitimately say why.
