Metros and Subways

Metros and Subways are two names for a type of high-capacity public transport that runs on rails in urban settings, usually below ground, but sometimes on ground level or on elevated tracks. Metros have numerous stations strategically positioned in the city, usually within a kilometer of one-another, in order to facilitate commuting and access to the city.

When did the last steam train run on londons underground?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The last steam passenger train was in 1961 but LT kept a number of steam engines for maintainace work when the electic power was switched off. The engines were used only on the surface and sub surface lines like the Met, District and Circle Lines NOT on the deep level tube lines. LT at the end operated ex GWR pannier tank 0-6-0's bought 2nd hand from BR. They were based at Neasden but were also used at Lillie Bridge(near Earls Court) and Acton works. Famously a number of years after BR had finished with steam engines a steam train would leave Neasden each day and run to Watford tip with all the waste materials. It was rather like a ghost train!! The FINAL steam train was in June 1971 when LT ran a final commemorative train from Moorgate to Neasden. LT did however allow steam trains to run again on the Met in the 1980's & 90's but they were for steams fans and not normal operations.

What subway goes from Battery Park to bloomingdales?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are actually two Bloomingdale's locations in New York City. The original store is located at 59th Street and Lexington Avenue, and the second is in SoHo, at 504 Broadway, between Spring and Broome Streets.

To get to the original location:

Take the Uptown E train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to Lexington Avenue-53rd Street.

Then walk 6 blocks north on Lexington to 59th Street.

To get to the SoHo location:

Take the Uptown 1-2-3 (the red line), 1 stop, from 34th Street-Penn Station to 42nd Street-Times Square.

Transfer at 42nd Street-Times Square to the Downtown N or R trains (of the N-R-Q, the yellow line). Take the Downtown N or R from 42nd Street-Times Square to Prince Street (at Broadway).

Then walk 1.5 blocks down Broadway: Prince Street ---> Spring Street ---> Broome Street.

Can dogs travel on the London underground?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, dogs are allowed on the London Tube but only when they don't disturb other passengers so I would not go during the rush hour (I guess you don't want to go at that time of day anyway unless you have to). A lot of Tube stations don't have lifts so you might have to carry your dog on the escalators.

When did London underground open?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The present Circle line (and varying boundaries) was demarked as an area in 1846 when the Royal Commission on Metropolitan Railway termini agreed that there would be no single railway station for London. On 10th January, 1863, the stretch of the current Hammersmith & City line from Paddington to Farringdon was opened to the public as the Metropolitan Railway. Further schemes then followed and the existing tube network eventually broke through the original 1846 agreement but no major mainline railway station yet breaches this demarcation.

Whose idea was it to build the London underground?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The London Underground first opened on 10 January 1863, between Paddington and Farringdon. The railway was then extended, added to and expanded over a period of time. No one person designed the whole of the Underground as a vision.

What is best way from New York to Boston?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Depending on where you are located you have a lot of options to get to New York, some of the most popular are using bus, personal vehicle, via train and via plane.

If you live in the United States you can easily take a train or a bus and even visit New York with your own car. All 3 options are pretty affordable, so it is just a matter of your own choice.

However, if you live outside the United States, taking a plane seems to be the only logical option. To get a cheap plane ticket to New York, you can either visit one of the local travel agencies or check out some of the larger travel websites such as Expedia and TripAdvisor.

I recommend checking the related links, because there you will find some pretty cool guides about how to do it.
