Does formatting the OS on a partition several times damage the hard disk?

No formatting a conventional hard drive does not slow down the hard disk.

When we talk about formatting, this means the removal of all data on the disk as well as the operating system (OS). This is often done in order to reinstall a faulty OS or to install a now one.

Basic formatting of the drive deletes the file allocation table leaving the drive "empty" to be installed over (similar to a major delete, but without the recycle bin option); low level formatting of the drive (normally done through the motherboards ROM system) "wipes" all contents of the drive.

I suppose the notion of formatting the drive and slowing it down comes from the fact that the read/ write function performed by the disks heads may in some way damage the disk. This is simply not true.

HOWEVER, solid state drives should not be continually formatted and should not have any form of optimisation software run on them. They work according to different principals (as opposed to a magnetic drive), and continual reading and writing of data to the sectors does actually cause them to become "worn", the entire cluster is then no usable; the unusable clusters are stored in a portion of the memory so that the computer cannot access them and try to store data over the "bad cluster". The same applies to flash drives as they are a smaller version of a solid state drive.

How do you copy and paste in excel?

You do it in the same way as in the same sheet. Select the cells that you want to copy. Then copy them in your preferred method, like by clicking on the copy icon on the Standard toolbar or using the Edit menu. Then go to the other sheet and put the cursor where you want the first cell of what you have copied to appear. Then paste it in your preferred method, like with the paste icon, the Edit menu or pressing Ctrl and V.

What are text files?

It is a plain text file, just text, no graphics, no formatting, no colours or anything like that. It is just for when the text is important, not how it looks. Web pages and programs and data are often in plain text files. Applications like Notepad are used to create text files.

How do you come up with a password?

Some people just use the name of there cat or dog.

(very low security and easy for anyone who knows the person to work out).

Others use combinations of words and numbers which that person relates to

a particular place, person or thing.

(these are a lot easier to remember and are secure)

Some choose random numbers and letters

(these are normally hard to remember, but most secure).

The longer the password the safer it is.

What is Service Pack 4 for Windows 2000?

I am not sure why this question has been asked. A service pack is nothing more than a group of updates packaged together and sometimes integrated into a release of an operating system. Windows 2000 is long obsolete and nobody should still be using it. Windows XP came out AFTER 2000 and it is obsolete and now longer supported.

Why do you use print preview?

One use would be to see how your work would look when it is printed. You can have a look at it from a different zoom angle and you would be able to see whether the font is readable from that distance or whether the pictures are too small, or whether the title needs to be bigger, and you can see the whole sheet together - not just 1 third of it or something. It is also possible to adjust margins in Print Preview.

How does the switch learn the Mac address?

Each Ethernet frame sent from one computer to another includes the source and the destionation MAC addresses. It is from these addresses that the switch learns what device is connected to the port.

At first, the switch won't know the destination address; in that case, it will broadcast the frame through all of its ports. But soon it learns this information.

It is also possible, in some switches, to add the MAC address through configuration commands.

Do all partitions on a computer have to be formatted with the same file system?

Not necessarily. If you only use Windows, it makes no sense to have different file file systems, as FAT32 is rather inefficient and Windows 2000/XP/Vista default to NTFS anyway. If you dual-boot with Linux, you should use different file systems, as Linux doesn't handle NTFS very well, Windows can't read Linux partitions (like ext3 or ReiserFS) at all without additional software, and FAT32 is unsuitable for both. If you use Linux by itself, you can use multiple file systems without any issue, although sticking to one may be easier for performance or maintenance reasons (ReiserFS is faster; ext2/3 has more widespread support in various recovery tools).
