Is the solar system about halfway between the center of the Milky Way galaxy and its outer edge?

The solar system is the Milky Way galaxy, Earth, and all other planets and galaxies are the solar system.

How many planet have water in the Milky Way?

There is believed to be water, both naturally forming, and through man's intervention.

On November 13, 2009, scientists from NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite said unequivocally there is water on the moon and plenty of it.

In October 2009 a satellite slammed into a crater on the moon and about 24 gallons of water filled the hole from the impact.

See related link for a New York Times article.

It hasn't yet been definitively established that there is no water ice anywhere on the moon. The 'Lunar Prospector' spacecraft indicated that water ice might be present at both the north and south lunar poles, in agreement with 'Clementine' results for the south pole. It isn't known how much water could actually be found.

Although the moon does not have pockets of water like earth, water deposits have been found in soil deposits that where taken from the moon in the first Apollo missions. These deposits looked like orange dirt and it was not discovered until recently that these orange particle contain water.

A report was released in September 2009, indicating that an Indian lunar exploration team had indeed found "large quantities of water" on the moon. Furthermore, data collected from the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft also pointed to the strong possibility that water was still being formed on the moon.

Is the Milky Way an asteroid belt?

No, the Milky Way is not an asteroid belt. It is a large barred spiral galaxy that contains our solar system along with billions of stars, gas, and dust. An asteroid belt is a region in a solar system where many asteroids are found orbiting the Sun.

How many au is the sun from the center of the Milky Way Galaxy?

An AU is the wrong measurement, that's like asking how far it is from London to New York - in millimeters.

An AU is merely the average distance from the Sun to the Earth, some 50 million km. The Milky way is about 100,000 Light years in diameter - a light year is about 10 trillion kilometers (10^16km = 10,000,000,000,000,000km).

Since we are on the outer edge of one of the spirals, make that 50,000 light years from the Sun to the center of the Milky Way. So if my math is right,

(50,000 * 10^16 )/ (50 * 10^6)

= (5 * 10^20) / (5 * 10^7)

= 10^13 AU

How many years until the Andromeda and Milky Way galaxies collide?

There are 2 much smaller irregular galaxies that orbit our galaxy called the Magellanic Clouds. These are abbreviated LMC and SMC (large and small Magellianic Cloud). These will one day gradually collide with The Milky Way but it is a long time until that happens; no need to worry. There is also the Andromeda Galaxy which is on a collision course with us.

Will Earth ever fall into the black hole at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy?

No, Earth will not fall into the black hole at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. The black hole is located about 26,000 light-years away from Earth, and our solar system is orbiting it at a safe distance. The gravitational pull from the black hole is not strong enough to pull Earth into it.

What does the Milky Way simply caramel taste like?

Milky Way Simply Caramel has a rich and creamy caramel flavor enveloped in smooth milk chocolate, creating a sweet and indulgent taste experience.

Is the milky way galaxy located 2.2 million light years from the sun?

No. Reach up and pinch your nose; that's part of the Milky Way you are pinching! We - each and every one of us here on Planet Earth - are as much a part of the Milky Way as one of your hairs is part of YOU. We're part of the Earth; the Earth is part of our solar system. This solar system, and every individual star you can see in the sky, are part of the Milky Way.

Diameter of the milky way in kilometers?

Ok you asked for it

Our Sun is 1,400 light years from the galactic center of the Milky-way now given that the sun and all of us here are on a trip around the Milky way for the next 220 million years it takes to do one cycle of the Milky-way and also the Milky way is on a trip which takes 50 million years to rotate, thus this answer is variable ( not, I am sure, that this matters in our daily lives)

This equates to 300,000 (the speed at which light travels in near kms) x 60 ( to make one minute) x60 ( to make the hour) x 24 ( to make the day) x 1400 (the distance of the sun to the galactic center) x 364.25 (to turn days into years) =132,179,040,000,000,000,000,000 kms from the galactic center or about 130 thousand billion billion kilometers

or 130 billion trillion kilometers

or 130 thousand million million million kilometers

or better still 1,400 light years

How many stars in the milky way galaxy have earth like planets?

It is estimated that there are billions of stars in the Milky Way galaxy that could potentially have Earth-like planets within their habitable zones. The exact number is difficult to determine with certainty due to the vastness of our galaxy and the limitations of current technology.

Why have no pictures been taken outside of the milky way galaxy?

We are inside the Milky Way galaxy, and so it is difficult to tell exactly what it looks like from the outside - because we aren't "outside."

Think of it like this: If you are inside your house and never went outside, you could still look out the windows and see other houses. But you wouldn't be able to SEE your house. You could figure it out, by drawing a diagram - but it isn't the same thing as seeing it from the outside.

From Earth, we see thousands upon thousands of stars. With big telescopes, we can also see other things between the stars, and some of those things are other galaxies.

---

Some galaxies are hard to see because dense groupings of stars and nebulae in the Milky Way are in the way. But given that, we can see a dozen or so "satellite" galaxies of the Milky Way, and the next closest galaxies are those in the Andromeda group, some 2 million light-years away. This means that the light we see left Andromeda more than two million years ago. We are seeing them as they were that long ago. However, galaxies persist for billions of years, so they are likely very little changed from what they looked like then.

How many years would it take a spacecraft traveling at the speed of light to cross the milky way galaxy?

The very fastest human-made spacecraft ever aren't out of this solar system yet, and they were launched in the 70s.

"Billions of years" is, if anything, an understatement.

What is the closest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way Galaxy?

The closest galaxy to our galaxy the Sagittarius galaxy but its Dwarf Galaxy, Andromeda is the Complete Galaxy and yet classified as the Galaxy which is closest to our galaxy. Facts : There are 12 Dwarf galaxies and 1 complete galaxy within the distance of 500,000 light years. Andromeda Galaxy is moving towards our galaxy at the speed 300,000 Kilometers per hour, but its so far that i would take millions of year to have a clash.

If the Sun and Earth were at the edge of the disk of the Milky Way Galaxy what would be the diameter of the galaxy in light years?

The diameter of the Milky Way galaxy is about 100,000 light-years. If the Sun and Earth were at the edge of the disk, we would still be within the galaxy's boundaries, so the diameter would remain around 100,000 light-years.

This cluster of galaxies is made up of about 25 galaxies including the milky way?

Yes its called the Local Cluster or Local Group, we have many minor Globular or Cluster Galaxies orbiting our own.

How many neutron stars are in milky way?

It is estimated that there are several hundred million neutron stars in the Milky Way galaxy, with more being created through supernova explosions over time. However, only a small fraction of these neutron stars have been detected and studied so far.

Why do astronomers hypothesize that there is a supermassive black hole at the center of the milky way?

Astronomers hypothesize the presence of a supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way because of the high velocities exhibited by stars orbiting the region and the intense radiation emitted, which is characteristic of black hole activity. Additionally, observations of other galaxies suggest that supermassive black holes are common in galactic centers.

The Milky Way Galaxy and about 17 other galaxies within 3 million light-years of the Milky Way Galaxy are collectively known as what?

The Milky Way Galaxy and about 17 other galaxies within 3 million light-years are collectively known as the Local Group. This group includes galaxies such as Andromeda (M31), Triangulum (M33), and the Milky Way.

How do you get pictures of the Milky Way galaxy?

This question can be looked at two different ways.

  1. Where can you find pictures of the Milky Way
  2. How do you get a picture of the Milky Way - if we're in it!!

So two questions in one.

  1. The best place to get pictures of the Milky Way is to go to google images and type Milky Way. Or for a great picture see related link.
  2. Parts of the Milky Way Galaxy are visible from Earth, but when you see a picture of the complete Milky Way, it's just an artists rendition of what the Milky Way Galaxy should look like, based on local observations and looking at the Andromeda galaxy, which is very similar to ours.

The Milky Way galaxy is much smaller than?

The Milky Way galaxy is much smaller than the largest known galaxy in the universe, IC 1101. IC 1101 is about 6 million light-years in diameter, whereas the Milky Way is approximately 100,000 light-years in diameter.

Who owns the Milky Way galaxy?

Lots of people own little bits of the Milky Way galaxy. The Earth and everything on it is part of the Milky Way so if you own anything at all you too own a bit of the Milky Way.

People themselves are also part of the Milky Way so in a way bits of the Milky Way own parts of the Milky Way.

Classified into different types elliptic spiral and barred spiral ours is the milky way?

The Milky Way is classified as a barred spiral galaxy. This means it has a central bar-shaped structure with spiral arms extending from it. The other type mentioned, elliptic spiral galaxies, have a more elliptical shape without distinct spiral arms.

Did Star Trek ever travel outside the Milky Way galaxy?

Yes. In the second pilot, the first one with Kirk as the Captain, they left the galaxy. In the one with the Medusan Ambassador, they left it again. I am not sure if the Kelvans took he Enterprise outside the galaxy or not (the episode in which the crew was mostly turned into small paperweight-sized objects). And in one episode of TNG the Enterprise D wound up so far from this galaxy, I don't know if they could even tell where it was. I think this was a Q episode but am not sure.

Is the consellation Big Dog in the Milky Way Galaxy?

The constellation is basically a direction in the sky, so it includes parts of our galaxies, but you can also see other galaxies in the same direction (in the same constellation).
