Minecraft typically runs out of memory when you are loading more memory than what your computer can handle. To fix this, you should lower the fog by pressing f, and turn the graphics (esc -> options -> video options -> Graphics: Fancy -> Graphics: Fast) from Fancy to Fast.

Upon entering the main menu of minecraft, access the multiplayer menu, from there you can either choose add server, to have the server listed int he multiplayer menu, or you can choose direct connect.

Add server:

Type in a name you want to call the server for future reference, and also type the ip of the server into the ip box. Click done, and then you should be able to see the server listed, you can then click on the server and connect using the connect button.

Direct connect:

Simply click on the button for direct connect, and type in the server ip into the adress box and then click join server.

It may be because you're not in the Taiga biome (or the Snow/Winter Biome) what you can do is make a snow golem by placing two snow blocks on each other and then put a pumpkin on top, they produce snow when they move around and they die in the desert biome. I made heaps of snow golems to guard my house in the forest biome and it turn it into the Taiga biome so my sugar cane farm kind of stuffed up.

If your in a multilayer game on someones else's server then you have to be an "OP" (a lesser administrater) in order to do anything other then look around.

If you are in single player some ores like, diamonds, redstone, iron, etc, need to have the right tool or an upgraded tool to break it the right way. Iron blocks need a "stone pick-ax" or it will just disintegrate without leaving you anything if you use a shovel, ax, wooden pick-ax, etc.
