How do speakers use magnets to produce sound?

Electricity and magnetism combine to create sound in a conventional speaker in a fairly simple way. The basis of this energy conversion isn't that difficult to understand. And yes, it is energy conversion - the conversion of electrical energy (the signal) to mechanical energy (the sound). And if you guessed that a microphone does the opposite conversion, you'd be correct. Let's break down the speaker a bit, but we need to do just a bit of review along the way. Electricity creates a magnetic field around its path of travel. Always. If we take some wire and roll a coil and pass electricity through it, it will create a magnetic field around the coil. (This is the basis for the electromagnetic.) If the electricity we pass through the coil is changing, then the magnetic field it generates will change. (The electromagnet uses direct current.) The changing field will cause the magnetic field around the coil to change. Hang onto that thought and lets look at one more thing. If we take our little coil of wire and attach it to a fairly rigid conically shaped piece of material, we'll have a speaker cone. We'll attach the outer edges of our cone to what is called a "surround" which is flexible. Then we'll attach our surround to a rigid frame. One more thing here. Remember our coil? The one on the cone? We're going to "hang" the cone so that a permanent is inside the coil. Remember that the cone and coil are one piece, and they can move out and in because the flexible surround allows that. And in the "neutral" position where the cone hangs with no signal, there is that permanent magnet (which is fixed to the back of the rigid frame that supports the cone) inside the coil. Got all that? We're set. If we apply a changing electrical signal to the coil, it sets up a changing magnetic field around the coil. This changing magnetic field interacts with the magnetic field of the permanent magnet. The interaction will create a force which will move the coil and cone assembly. It will move the assembly out and in according to the electrical signal. And as the cone moves out and in, it creates a sound wave. The speed at which the cone moves out and in will set the frequency of the sound (the pitch), and the amount the cone moves out and in on each cycle of the signal will set the amplitude of the sound (the volume). That's it! Really!

What is the difference of stereo or mono?

Mono (monophonic, or monaural) is sound from a single source. All speakers in a mono system (like an intercom) will carry the same signal. Stereo (stereophonic) is sound from two sources, ideally spaced apart, and reproduces sound the way we hear it naturally, with two ears.

How many different kinds of mp3 players are there?

MP3 players come in all shapes and sizes, and with different capabilities, both in storage and in power. Most are small enough to fit in your pocket. MP3 players are also adaptable in your car as well as on a table top, with external speakers. MP3 players are able to store music as well as other types of sound files and then play them back.

There are three basic types of MP3 players, Hard Drive, Micro Drive, and Flash Based players. Hard drive and micro drive both use a hard disk and have moving parts, which can have a tendency to skip if jarred. Hard drive MP3 players are also heavier and tend to be a bit larger than micro drive and flash based players. However they also have the largest storage capacity, some more than ten gigabytes, which is more than 2500 music files. Second in storage capacity is the micro drive player, being able to store between five and six gigabytes, more than 1500 MP3 files. Smaller and weighing less, but still having moving parts. Finally there is flash based MP3 players, which are small and have no moving parts. So if jarred skipping is not a problem. These players seem to be very popular with joggers and all sorts of sports enthusiasts. Both hard drive and micro hard drive MP3 players use rechargeable batteries that can only be recharged, no replaced. Some of the different types of devices also include additional features. Some Hard Drive players include a small video screen in which pictures and video files that have been stored on the drive can be viewed. Some MP3 players include features for digital voice recording and playback.

Some examples of Hard Drive players are Microsoft Zune, Ipod Nano, Sony Walkman.

Examples of Micro Drive are Philips GoGear Jukebox, Archos Gmini XS 100, IRiver H10, Creative Zen 5GB Micro 5GB

Flash Drive examples are Sony NWZ-S738F Walkman 8GB, Samsung S5, Zune 8GB, SanDisk Sansa Fuze. Just to name a few. Learn more at http://ez-files.blogspot.com

Which is better quality WAV or MP3?

The .WAV format offers completely uncompressed audio. The audio is not reduced in quality, or changed in any way. However, the file size is very large. .MP3, on the other hand, compresses the audio to achieve smaller file sizes. The files can be up to ten times smaller than its .WAV counterpart, but the audio will be reduced in quality. Most people do not notice this difference, or care about it, but most audiophiles, or people with high-end audio equipment agree that .WAV is preferable.

It's all about priority. What do you want more, better quality, or smaller file size?

.WAV = High quality, big files.

.MP3 = Lower quality, smaller files.

Who came up with the idea for cellphones?

I was unaware that the Drug Enforcement Association made an Application for cell phones. In case you don't get my humor, I meant that perhaps the app's name would be iD.E.A. But, if the question is meant ask who first thought to make a cell phone, here's what I think. I'm sure Alexander Graham Bell probably would have liked to have done it in 1848, though he simply didn't have the know-how. Nikola Tesla probably could have pioneered this technology if he weren't so engrossed in making electropropulsive flying machines. Nathan B. Stubblefield was gained a patent for a wireless phone in 1908. It was much more like a field radio than anything else. In 1947, A patent for wireless cell stations was made by AT&T. Sweigert the first efficient cellular telephony device in 1969. Martin Cooper made up the design for the first cellular phone that became successful.
