Do Norwegians celebrate Christmas?

Of course we do. Northern Europe practically invented Christmas, only we don't call it Christmas. We call it its original name - Jul (or Yule in english).

Sinse northern europe was the last part to Christianize, the new religion of Christianity was heavily influenced by our old pegan traditions.

Yule is one example.

Of course it has changed through the ages, but Yule in Denmark is today still a celebration of the Light ( Midwinter Solstice ), with a few christian symbols thrown in.

What day is Christmas celebrated on in Norway?

Norway's traditional Christmas customs include Nisse, a gnome or an elf guarding animals. It is said in Norway that Nisse can have goat-like features (Christmas Buck, or Julebukk in Norwegian). Children get bowls of a certain type of porridge ready for him - if they don't, he will play tricks on them. How is that for a traditional story for Christmas in Norway? The idea of Julebukk is a very old one and was most likely known by the Vikings. In earlier times during Christmas in Norway, one person dressed in goatskin (carrying a goat's head!) would come to the Christmas celebration unnanounced and act as if they were dying shortly afterwards. Translate welcome in Norwegian?

One can say "Hallo", "Heisann", "God dag," or simply "Hei," or "halla," depending on how formal or informal you are.

"Hei" is the normal phrase to use, but one can also use "Hallo".

Those are some of the most common greetings I can think of right now:

Norwegian - English

Simple words:

  • Hei - Hi
  • Hallo - Hello
  • God dag - Good day

Simple full greetings:

  • Hvordan går det? - How are you?
  • Lenge siden sist - It's been a while (directly: Long since last)

However, greetings in Norway is more than just chumping out some of those sentences, here is a quick course:

  • Do not greet people you don't know, only use simply greetings to shopkeepers etc.
  • Be VERY careful asking someone how they are when meeting someone, it is seemed as a shallow useless greeting by many.
  • Use first name, no titles (mr, mrs etc), in most cases.
  • A firm handshake, eye contact and a smile is the proper way to introduce yourself.
  • Kissing on cheeks, hugging etc is for friends and relatives only.

Also might add that if you are in a mountain, refrain from asking "how are you?" as a greeting, that's a direct insult (it would be like: I can see you are struggling, I'm doing better than you).
hallo

A viking from Norway who founded the first European settlement in Greenland?

It is most commonly believed that the vikings led by Leif Erickson's father were the first to establish a settlement there but, history also tells us that the Vikings failed to maintain the community during the little ice age because they didn't learn to adapt the way the Inuits did. Kind of leads me to believe that the Inuits were there first.
