Most oil rig platforms today do not float. The platform is usually positioned atop several pillars that extend to the bottom of the sea bed on which they are located. Newer technology however, has developed barges that contain oil drilling equipment. These newer barges do float but must rely on precise electronics to keep them positioned within a couple of feet about the drill site on the sea bed.

What is tripping pipe on an oil rig?
The term "tripping the well" got it's start most likely as a reference to the "round trip" made by the drill bit. The first leg of the trip is coming out of the hole, by lifting the entire drill string and unscrewing the upper most drill pipe called a joint, the newly removed drill pipe is laid beside the rig and the drill string is lifted again, etc. until all drill pipe is out of the hole. After service work is performed, for example change to fresh drill bit, then the second leg of the trip is to reverse the process, lowering the drill string as each new joint is made until fully back in the hole with the bit on bottom. The 58k/ yr cited in one reference may be all rigs and all types of drilling.

I do not think there is an actual correspondence school for Oil Rigs. Or at least I have never heard of one. There are, however, some online resources and correspondence courses for certain aspects of the drilling operation such as Blow Out Prevention, diesel mechanics, and electrical training since most of the new rigs are essentially electrical with power generated with diesel motors.
There are, however, several companies that are now trying to provide training for working on drilling rigs. Nabor's Drilling is one example, with at least one school in Casper Wyoming.
