Unfortunately the Piper Alpha no longer exists due to the disaster that destroyed it. It was located offshore from Aberdeen, Scotland. Aberdeen is the base from where helicopters transport workers between land and the platforms. A helicopter flight between Aberdeen and the offshore oilfield there is around 1 hour. There are no flights from this oilfield to London.

You do need a passport as it is the only form of identification the heliport will accept. Also, in an emergency you may be flown to Norway and it makes things easier if you have your passport with you.

The deepwater drilling and high temperature/ high pressure target pay zones adds difficulty and risk to the drilling operations. There is a temporary ban on new exploratory deep water drilling in the Gulf of Mexico although this has been challenged in court. The planned leasing of new exploratory blocks offshore Florida has been halted by President Obama.

Those in favor of the ban feel the environmental and safety risk of offshore drilling in these particular cases is too high. They feel more study of the risks should be done before drilling permits are issued.

Those opposed to the ban state that the country need to produce its own oil (lower imports) and drilling creates jobs. They also consider the BP spill was caused by a few individuals and offshore drilling is safe. Those oppose to the ban also note that the deepwater rigs in the gulf coast area are leaving making it more difficult for oil companies to continue with their plans.

Safety procedures for oil rig work are numerous and one has to do many courses for it. One can not, for instance just start working for a company and just go offshore. It requires training and courses in safety.

Also, one does not only follow the procedures of the rig, but also the procedures laid down by the company one works for. I work for an oilfield service company and we have a contract with an oil company that owns rigs. So I have to follow both companies procedures not only for my own safety, but for those who work on the same rig.

Every engine model has a different size of rings. The rings are probably the hardest part to change, because you have to disassemble the entire engine. If removing, tearing down and rebuilding an engine is beyond your abilitys, you should get a good used engine and swap it. Often replacing it with a used engine will be much cheaper.

The formation of gas hydrates is quite complex. Fortunately, there is a Wikipedia link, with (as usual) excellent information. Formation of these crystals requires the presence of methane, high pressures and cold conditions, all of which have been met by the blown out well. The ocean floor at 5,000 ft is approximately 42 degrees. These crystals will clog pipelines. Apparently this is what happen when the cofferdam failed to work. One very interesting fact is that the methane hydrates formed in the dome of the cofferdam and added bouyancy. A redesigned cofferdam might be heavier.

Hydrates have been a problem in Canada and Alaska wells and pipelines with the usual treatments of lower pressures, heat and methanol treatments.

BP is drilling two relief wells. These wells will plug the blown out well from the bottom using a heavy mud, designed to overcome the pressure of oil coming out of the well. It is a reliable method, but takes time. The well should be plugged (no more leaks) in early August. The final step is to pour cement into the blown out well, to create a permanent seal.
