Is it okay for someone to open office mail that is addressed to you but also has the company name on it as well?

It depends how it's been addressed.

If it's marked 'confidential' or 'personal' or 'FAO' (for attention of' a named person), it should only be opened by that person or their representative (a secretary can open such mail for their boss for example).

No-one legally has any right to open mail (internal or otherwise) addressed to an individual without their prior consent. HOWEVER - in large offices, it's often company practice to open (but not read) all incoming mail before distribution within the building.

How do you get back to a blank default page in open office writer?

Directly under the File button (top left of the page) there's a small button that looks like a small page with a corner missing. Click that - it'll present you with a blank page. Alternatively - click the down arrow immediately to the right of that icon - for a list of new file types.

What is the purpose for slide timings?

They allow you to tell PowerPoint how long a slide should be shown before moving to the next one. That way you can make a slide show run at the speed you want it and have it progress from one slide to another without you touching it after you start it. For some slide shows you want to move to the next slide yourself, as you might be talking about it, but for other slide shows you might want it to run automatically. You can set the timings so that there is enough time for people to read the slide and for any animations on the slide to complete before moving on to the next slide.

Incidentally, Version 4.0 has now been released for download - see related link.

How do you download OpenOffice.org Writer without all the other open office software package?

OpenOffice.org Writer can be installed on its own. This is an option available in many Linux distributions. Consult your Linux documentation and package manager for your download options. If you find a single package, you are out of luck. If you find separate packages for Writer, Base, Calc, Impress, etc. (like in Ubuntu), Install just Writer and its pre-requisits.

However, the Windows editions install all components by default.
