Opera

‘Opera’ is the Italian word for ‘work’ and an abbreviation of ‘Opera in musica’. An opera is a drama to be sung with instrumental accompaniment by one or more singers usually in costume and with scenery. As well as singing, this may include recitative or spoken dialogue. In what ways did Grace Moore defy conventions?

The only thing I can think of was the fact the actress/Songstress successfully crossed over from Opera into popular music- Not Done! at the time with a handful of exceptions. Her theme Song-Love me Forever- dates from l933 and was successfully revived by modern artists in the fifties and sixties. Song is somewhat controversial as it suggests a suicide pact- and that was heady stuff for "33) She was in at least eight movies from l933-35 and they were highly popular. It is true Lily Pons did one or two cameo roles- but Grace was BOTH an operatic singer AND a movie actress and popular artist. That"s the unconventional angle. Robert Merrill"s anthem antics are not remotely the same.

Which category of soprano voice specializes in ornamentation and rapid passages in the upper register?

The technique of such runs, trills and ornamentation of a vocal line is called coloratura, Italian for "coloring." In practice, all voices were at one time expected to indulge in this kind of vocal display. The early to mid 19th century in Italy was the height of popularity for bel canto (beautiful singing) operas by such composers as Mozart, Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini. The term has become most identified with sopranos, who are then called coloratura sopranos.

Most frequently banned operas before 1900?

You would need to check the various places that would keep such records as your question is very broad. Operas were 'banned' for various reasons [genuine or otherwise], by various persons and for various lengths of times. Verdi's 'masked ball' had to be altered to the extent that there are a number of versions set either in Stockholm or in Boston or in Naples. Gilbert and Sullivan's Mikado was also banned by the British Government.

What is sopranos voice?

A soprano voice is the highest-pitched tone of voice - normally a term applied the highest female voice. Some young men are capable of this pitch and can be called "boy sopranos". The range of voice is usually from middle C to a high A, or ranging approximately from middle C and up to two octaves above that note.

How do you become a tenor from a baritone?

You try really hard dude. Practice everyday, but never force your voice. Stick to the notes you can easily sing and eventually you will see that the higher notes you previously had to strain for will not be strained anymore. You'll be able to sing them. A G4 is about as high as you can get without strain kicking in. Note: that is only 6 semitones away from a tenors normal range. But then again you have 6 semitones of lower notes than a tenor.

Be a Baritone alright! That's what you are I'm guessing? So stick with it and people will say you sound great. Baritone is a stronger, richer voice and has a great tone when compared to a tenor. If you try to be a tenor, cracks will appear and the tenor guy will almost always get the role instead of you.

Some extra notes: If you're a teen your voice is still developing so your range will gain some extra range when your adult voice settles in. Then you might find out you're a baritenor in which case you will have the range of both a baritone and tenor. Take care of your voice, especially if you're a teen.

Good luck. And use what you where born with/don't try to be something you're not.
