Is clear coat the same as laquer?
Yes. I done i job recently with spray cans. Didn't turn out well go to a proper painter if it's for a car otherwise it won't be good enough
start with a 1200 then 1500, 2000grit and if you can get hold of any finer 2500 or 3000 then go all the way through the grits up to, i think a 4000 is the finest I've seen, but don't skip any grits. I've found up to a 2000 is sufficient then rubbing compound, polish and wax. remember when wet sanding....LIGHT HANDS, PLENTY OF WATER and DON'T GO TOO NEAR TO ANY EDGES.

Lacquer thinner (any containing strong solvents like ketones , xylene, toluene, etc) will damage any paint, including clearcoat. Thinners for alkyd enamels is fine. It is a mild hydrocarbon solvent found in wax and grease remover, and won't damage the paint.
